DVD/CD-ROM driver with Windows 8.1

Upgrading to 8.1 from Windows 8, my DVD/CD-ROM also failed due to the non-update feature of 8.1. As my DVD/CD came with our Gateway DX-4831, the driver should be within the realm of Microsoft. They are listed as the source for the driver file. But I have had no luck whatsoever in attempting to 'fix' this glitch.

We had a real problem with our BELL fiber optic service and had to replace the whole suite of hardware. They actually replaced the modem twice as the one they sent to replace ours was also faulty. One bright spot here was the tech who came to investigate. Excellent technician but he could not come up with a solution either. It wasn't a BELL problem but he looked at it anyway. I have lost a lot of info with this equipment swap as  I did not have the back up running to the external hard drive. Whoever had been helping me from the community earlier was really helping but I have nothing to refer to  in order to contact 'him'. Hopefully this message will reach the right desk.

    Hi,

As per your previous discussion with Bill Smithers, Windows 8.1 and Windows 8.1 Pro doesn't come with DVD movie playback capability. However, you can search for a DVD player app in the Microsoft Store.

Another option that you may want to consider is to upgrade to Windows 10. Please note that The Windows DVD Player app enables Windows 10 PCs with an optical disc drive to play DVD movies. If you have the Windows 10 Anniversary update, you may avail the 7-day free trial to check your device's compatibility with the DVD player and then buy it to enjoy full viewing experience:

    Windows DVD Player.

You may use the link provided below as your reference should you decide proceed with the upgrade:
