converting basic disk to dynamic - not an option

Hello. I found this article (KB 314343) and attempted to convert my hard disk to a dynamic volume so that I can extend it to use the unallocated space. I followed these instructions:

Convert a Basic Disk to a Dynamic Disk

Use the Disk Management snap-in in Windows XP to convert a basic disk to a dynamic disk. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Log on as Administrator or as a member of the Administrators group.
  2. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
  3. Click Performance and Maintenance, click Administrative Tools, and then double-clickComputer Management.
  4. In the left pane, click Disk Management.
  5. In the lower-right pane, right-click the basic disk that you want to convert, and then clickConvert to Dynamic Disk.

I got stuck at this point, because when I right-clicked that disk, "convert" was not an option. Is there another way to do this without having to buy software? I tried using Acronis Disk Director, but it won't do anything over 100 MB with the trial version.

The computer is running XP Pro. Thank you.

You must be right-clicking on partition. But you have to click on the disk (a box before all partitions on disk with all things written like disk 0 Basic etc) right click on it and then click on convert to dynamic. either go to command prompt by running cmd. type following commands with each line ending with enter:

    diskpart

    list disk

select disk 0 (where disk 0 is your desired disk from previous command)

    convert DYNAMIC

    exit

    Hope it helps.
