unlocking the grid for icons on the desktop

I would like to be able to unlock the grid for placing icons on the desktop (not the start screen) in Windows 8, so that I can put icons in any arrangement.

Help?

And sorry about putting this in the mail forum, but there doesn't seem to be a "desktop" category to choose.

Hi,

As per your description, it appears to me that you want to sort the icons as you want it to be.

  1. Right click on an empty space on the desktop.
  2. Select ‘view’.
  3. In the choose details window, uncheck the "Auto arrange icon" and "Align icons to grid".

Please post back if you are still experiencing the issue. I will be glad to provide you with the additional options available that you can utilize to get the issue resolved.

After unchecking "Align to Grid" & "Auto Arrange Icons", I still can't move/release icons EXACTLY as I want them (i.e. Move 'Recycle Bin' to bottom RHS, such that the label (Recycle Bin) does not show (hidden by Taskbar, e.g.)

I have tried what you suggested but the icons on my desktop are still frozen. The apps are working but I am unable to move their position around.
