Dell Inspiron 1420 no audio after upgrading to Windows 10

After upgrading my Dell Inspiron 1420 to Windows 10, I have never had audio come out on the laptop speakers.  I have tried everything that was suggested by the virtual agent with no help at all.  It can play videos and register on the meter in the sound playback devices, but no sound is coming out of my PC.  I have attempted everything including contacting Dell and installing their recommended driver.  I have a feeling it is the audio chip driver on the laptop.  The company Sigmatel is no longer in business and no drivers are being updated to Windows 10.  I have the Windows 10 audio driver installed right now.

Ok so went thru your procedure and everything went fine.  I have updated Windows to the current version 1709 (OS Build 16299.64).  And..... Still no sound coming from Laptop speakers.  Yes if I do plug in external speakers, I do hear sound.  However this

fix is tough because the audio jack is near the front of the laptop near the space bar and I don't want to be lugging around speakers.  Any other suggestions?

Just as a note the Dell driver that is on their website for this laptop states an error that it is not the right driver for this sound card.

I also wanted to say that when I ran the bios diagnostics that sound does work on the PC, so this is just a software issue.  There has to be a better solution that just simply downgrading the pc back to windows 7.

This make and model does not even have drivers for Windows 7. Its likely incompatible with Windows 10.

My recommendation would be to downgrade to Windows 7 to maintain compatibility.

We are volunteers willing to help you try to resolve this issue.

If the onboard audio will not work you can disable it and use a USB add-on sound card which is not expensive.

Please let us know the results and if you need further assistance.

Please answer ALL of the following [admittedly tedious] diagnostic questions by number, preferably without quoting my post:

1a. When (approx. date) did you purchase the Dell computer?

1b. Where or from whom did you purchase the computer?

1c. Was the computer sold to you as a brand-new, never-been-used-by-anyone-else computer or as a used (refurbished) computer?

    1. Did the computer come with Win10 preinstalled, did you do a clean install of Win10, or did you upgrade a Win7 computer or a Win8.1 computer [<=PICK ONE!] to Win10?
    2. What, if any, third-party anti-virus application (i.e., not Windows Defender) might be installed?
    3. Has a Norton application or a McAfee application EVER been installed on the computer since you bought it?
    4. Have you ever run the McAfee Consumer Products Removal Tool?
    5. What Version & OS Build of Windows 10 is currently installed?

    • Press & hold the Windows Key and press the R key. In the RUN dialog, type WINVER and press the Enter key.

Marking one or more replies as ANSWER at any point will officially close your thread (if you case about such things) - and stop the bothersome email alerts. HELPFUL votes very much appreciated at anytime. Thank you.
