I have an Acer X223W monitor, that has worked fine with my Windows7 and then Wiindows10 system for years. I used it a its specified "native" resolution of 1680x1050 (1.6:1). In mid-November 2017, while the system was up and running and I was working with it, the monitor suddenly switched to a lower-resolution mode. Since then, settings won't give me a choice for 1680x1050; it only gives me 4:3 (that's 1.33:1) aspects except for one 1.25:1.
Things I have tried:
*** It knows it is dealing with the X223W monitor; that shows up on AdministrativeTools->ComputerManagement.
*** It believes (after searching online) it has the latest driver for the monitor.
I also noticed changes in my Windows system when this happened.
*** I no longer have Sleep as a power option, and cannot find it in the usual restoration places.
*** File Explorer no longer has the Sort By option; the only way to get it is to click on the column header.
*** Other little things that slip my mind. The big annoyance is loss of my screen resolution.

Thanks. I assume you mean buttons on the monitor. I did that soon after the problem happened. If "after a while" can mean a few weeks, then it fixed it. I kind of doubt that's what you meant.
Two days ago, my screen went a little crazy for about 5 seconds, then my computer was back to normal. The video resolution was fine. The "Sleep" was back on my power menu. File explorer was back to normal. My new CAD program, which could not render anything because my graphics was not supported was suddenly rendering images again; I didn't even realize that was related to this problem, because my old CAD program worked fine through it all.
I have no idea what happened! It was like the computer clicked its heels together three times and said 'There's no place like home', and it was back in Kansas.
All is well. I'm going to make a recovery drive (I think of these as CD-ROMS, but this will be a flash drive) before it takes a nose dive again.
