I have a Windows 8 64-bit PC and I have both the v1.0 and v4.1 WMP54G cards.
I was using the v1.0 card (Broadcom based) which installed with no issues, but I was having connectivity issues where the signal will drop and I have to disable->enable the card to re-establish connection. I know the card is good because it runs fine on my
Windows XP box with no issues. So I decided to try the v4.1 card.
I tried using the v4.1 card (Ralink based) which I couldn't install because Windows 8 would not recognize the card. I also tried going to the chipset manufacturer's web page (www.ralinktech.net, which is now Mediatek), and downloading the RT2500 PCI and RT255
drivers, but neither wouldn't work because either 1.) It's not compatible with Windows 8 since it was built for Windows 7 or 2.) Windows doesn't recognize that the driver was appropriate with the card.
What worked for me was I had to do the following:
- ) go to catalog.update.microsoft.com
- ) In The search field box on the upper right, type "ralink linksys wireless-G PCI windows 8"
- ) In the results listed, look for
Title: Ralink Technology Corp - Network - Linksys Wireless-G PCI Adapter
Products: Windows 7,Windows 8, Windows Drivers
Classification: Drivers (Other Hardware)
Last Updated: 6/2/2010
Version: 3.0.9.1
Size: 322KB
- ) I noticed there were two results that have the identical fields, but a different file size. I don't know what the differences are, so I went with the larger sized one.
- ) Click "Add"
- ) Click "view basket(1)" underneath the search field box
- ) Click the "Download" button
- ) Browse to a folder to download the file on your computer. I used a USB stick since I was going to install the driver on my Windows 8 machine without a network card.
- ) On my Windows 8 computer, copy the compressed file (.cab) to your desktop, double click it to open up a window containing the compressed files, and copy/paste the files to a temporary folder. It should contain the .inf file needed to install your card.
Next, when I installed the Linksys Wireless G PCI card v4.1, I went into Control Panel -> System -> Device Manager, and saw the card listed as a "Network Adapter." I right clicked on the item, clicked update... and pointed to the driver in my temporary folder.
It should take a moment and start installing the driver.
I know it's a little overkill explaining this and I hadn't even tried manually searching for the driver by device type but this was frustrating the heck out of me, but this solution worked so I'm excited to explain it. Hope this helps!
