Wired ethernet slow, wireless is fast. Why?

I recently bought a new computer with Windows 8 (all specs listed below).  My wireless connectivity is great, as it pushes the limits of my 3-year old wireless-g router.  However, I switched over to a wired connection a couple of weeks ago.  When I first start up, or when I reset my cable modem and router, I'll have 20-50ms ping with 50+MBps download speeds (more than what my internet provider promises, actually).  After about 5 minutes, the internet quality degrades to 400-600 (or slower) ms ping with under 1MBps download speed.  I've fought with Charter about this, thinking it was their fault.

I eliminated my router as the problem by duplicating the issue connected straight to my modem.  I eliminated my modem as the issue because when I'm using wireless on my computer to access through my router, the internet speeds are great.  So, long story slightly less long: wired either to the router or cable modem, my internet VERY quickly degrades.  Wireless, my internet stays true to the speeds and quality promised by my cable internet provider.

Specs:

Windows 8 64-bit

Computer:

HP Envy

AMD FX-6200 6-core processor

10GB ram

1.5TB hard drive

I'm using Norton Internet Security (came with the computer) and their standard setup.

    Hi Daniel,

This issue may occur due to cables that aren't connected properly, corrupted or incompatible drivers, missing updates, network connection settings or network connection settings.

    Method 1:

I would suggest you to run the “Internet Connection and Network Adapter troubleshooter” to diagnose the exact issue.

    Follow the steps mentioned below:

    a. Press “windows Key + W”.

    b. Type “Troubleshooting” in the search box and hit enter.

    c. Select “Network and Internet” option.

    d. First select “Internet connections” troubleshooter.

    e. Follow the on-screen instructions.

    f. Then select “Network Adapter” troubleshooter and then follow the on-screen instructions.

    Method 2:

If the issue persists, I would suggest you to disable security software temporarily and check.

Follow the steps to disable security software:

    a. Search for the security software installed in your computer in the Windows 8 search option.

    b. Click on Settings tab.

    c. Uncheck the option to turn on security software.

    d. Click on Save changes button.

    e. After disabling security software, check if it helps.

    Note:

    1) Antivirus software can help protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. In most cases, you shouldn't disable your antivirus software. If you have to temporarily disable it to install other software, you should re-enable it as soon as you're done. If you're connected to the Internet or a network while your antivirus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to attacks.

    2) Once you are done with the troubleshooting, ensure that you have checked the option Turn on security software under settings tab.

You can try to change the adapter settings so that your wired connection and Microsoft windows connection have a higher priority than any others.

    1. Go to Network Connections folder in explorer, also found under "Change Adapter Settings"  - Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network Connections. Click Advanced and then Advanced settings.
    2. Under Adapters and Bindings Tab, Move the network connection you want to have the highest priority to the top of the list with arrows on the right.
    3. Click "Provider Order" tab, move "Microsoft Windows Network" or most desirable to the top of the list as well.

You will never get a correct solution on here i can assure you!

I'm having the same problem but if i turn off my wireless laptop, then my wired works fast again.

I was told that if the wireless is set on your router first , then it takes priority. But i have tried connecting the wired first but still wireless takes over  .... I'm still searching for the solution.

its the wireless multimedia function: for wired connections it adds overhead so they are slower.

For wireless i noticed the drivers for most, if not all wireless antennas only use linkspeeds above 54mbps when wmm is enabled. I got around this by having one router with wmm off (for wired connections) and a wireless access point with wmm on connected lan to wan fashion

To use my home set up as example when i have only one router doing both wired and wireless these are the results:

    ISP comnection 1000 Gbps

My router hardware limitations: download wan to lan 815 mbps and upload lan to wan 775 mbps

    WMM ON:

Wireless Link speed 383 Mbps (slow due to wireless device limitation), download and upload speed 240 mbps

Wired link speed 1 gbps, 250 Mbps upload and download

    WMM OFF:

Wireless link speed 54 Mbps, download and upload speed 13mbps

Wired link speed 1gbps, 600 Mbps upload and download speed

And thats why I have 2 routers
