Something like these errors (the DLL name may vary):

The short version of the solution seems to be:

Replace  C:\Windows10Upgrade\wimgapi.dll with the one from C:\Windows\System32\wimgapi.dll

Here is a recent topic in the Microsoft TechNet Windows 10 community that starts with many impossible to work ideas and false starts but eventually an idea is posted where several folks report success following that advice (I cannot validate, test or verify) so I suggest reading through the replies focusing on the replies where this idea worked:

    https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windows/en-US/8ab132c5-fdf5-409d-92c8-a96ebfc3eeaa/error-while-upgrading-to-windows-10?forum=win10itprosetup

On I side note I wonder:

If you are upgrading Windows 7 to Windows 10 and have run into a snag (which seems to have a workaround) what other snags are you going to run into later?

If the upgraded system malfunctions or has issues I would always be wondering if the problems had something to do with the upgrade process that did not go well.

If it was me and if I wanted a Windows 10 system I would create some Windows 10 installation media and perform a clean/fresh install from scratch instead of doing an upgrade.  If you are having a problem like this right out of the chute what other problem lie ahead?

If you have an issue in the future that requires Windows 10 installation media to fix it what are you going to do (or do you have some Windows 10 installation media)?

    Hi,

Windows may fail to upgrade if there are possible corrupted system files. For us to identify the cause of this issue, we suggest that you perform the following methods:

Method 1: Temporarily disable 3rd party antivirus.

Note: Antivirus software can help to protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. In most cases, you shouldn't disable your antivirus software. If you have to temporarily disable it to install other software, you should re-enable it as soon as you're done. If you're connected to the Internet or a network while your antivirus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to attacks.

Method 2: Reset Windows Update components.

    1. Press Windows key and X. Click on Command Prompt (Admin).
    2. Type the following and press Enter after each command:
      • net stop wuauserv
      • net stop cryptSvc
      • net stop bits
      • net stop msiserver
      • ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
      • ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 Catroot2.old
      • net start wuauserv and press Enter
      • net start cryptSvc
      • net start bits
      • net start msiserver
    3. Close the Command Prompt (Admin) window.
    4. Try to perform an upgrade.

Let us know how it goes.

Hi there, thank you for the method(s) provided above. Unfortunately, after implementing method 2, the exact same thing happened.

(I too am upgrading form Windows 7 to Windows 10)

    What happens is:

    • I start / launch the upgrader.
    • It checks for system compatibility
    • Presents 3 [ticks] for approved system compatibility
    • starts downloading Windows 10
    • The text that said "downloading..." changes to "Verifying download. Please wait".
    • There is a "percent complete" number that increases slowly from 0% to 99%.
    • The "verifying download..." text changes to "Installing Window 10. Please Wait"
    • The "Percentage Complete" reverts back to 0%
    • And an error message box pops up saying

    • I click ok and

Please, please help! I am trying to make upgrade my elderly mother's laptop, and this is making things really difficult.

    Thank you very much

    Richard

I can find the DLL file in multiple folders

    C:\Windows\SysWOW64

    C:\Windows\System32 etc. etc.
