Power surge on the USB port with nothing plugged in

I'm in conversations with Dell about this as we speak but I thought I'd see if anyone on here can help.

Computer: Dell Inspiron 5570, Windows 10 Home Edition, in warranty.

I've been getting constant error messages on my computer about a power surge on the USB port virtually since I got it out of the box on Christmas Day (five days ago). There is nothing plugged into the USB port, although when there is they all work absolutely fine - I used a USB drive to transfer files from my old PC. It goes away occasionally, giving me false hope that I might have got rid of it, but then starts again a while later.

Steps taken (none of which have worked):

  • Turned it off and on again.
  • Checked for physical damage. There isn't any, as expected with a brand new computer.
  • Ran the Windows troubleshooter - the first time it told me to restart to install some drivers. I did that, no effect. Second time - couldn't find any problems (despite the error message going off constantly in the background).
  • Checked device manager - no errors or exclamation marks there, and no out of date drivers.
  • Installed other Dell-related updates: chipset and firmware drivers (as recommended by their support person)
  • Updated the BIOS.
  • Ran ePSA diagnostics, all tests passed and apparently nothing wrong on the hardware side.

What do???

Also, what's the best/easiest way to back up a computer (including games), given I may need to get it exchanged?

Update: It turns out the front left USB port is no longer working, so I suspect this is the problem port.

There is no visible damage to it but it doesn't work when plugging in a known good USB drive.

    Hi there,

I've not made any significant changes to the computer other than installing the updates it prompted me to install:

Feature update to Windows 10, version 1709

Update for Windows 10 Version 1709 for x64-based Systems (KB4058043)

Update for Windows 10 Version 1709 for x64-based Systems (KB4041994)

    2017-12 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1709 for x6a-based Systems (KB4054517)

    Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool for Windows 8, 8.1, 10 and Windows Server 2012, 2012 R2, 2016 x64 Edition - December 2017 (KB890830)

I've tried the reset option and it doesn't work. After pressing Reset the error notification keeps coming up, and restarting doesn't change anything.

In any case, the point is that the USB ports aren't in use when these messages are popping up, so I have no idea which port is making the message appear.

USB bus can be in use by card readers, webcam, and probably many other things internally.

I might run msinfo32 and look for problems or non OK's & also from the management console run the System Diagnostics and see if its Reports turns up anything.

As well as looking in Event viewer when I see problems pop up.

System Diagnostics gave all the components a zero in the assessment,

Probably fix that - Open a command prompt(admin) or powershell(admin) and run the command

    WinSat formal -v

    The other ...if I search

    Vendor ID:Device ID: 0x8086:0x9D15

there can be lots of reading and then lots more reading, looks like in HP forum disabling unused network adapters stops the error for many, but I didn't read the whole 21 forum pages there.

Ok, I looked at msinfo32 and there were no non-oks. But in Event Viewer there are a huge number of this warning:

A corrected hardware error has occurred.

    Component: PCI Express Root Port

Error Source: Advanced Error Reporting (PCI Express)

    Bus:Device:Function: 0x0:0x1C:0x5

    Class Code: 0x30400

Running System Diagnostics didn't bring anything up, although for some reason it thinks all my system specs are poor/very poor (CPU, gaming graphics, graphics, disk, memory) despite the fact that my PC is brand new and pretty high spec as far as things go...

Edit: actually looking at it, System Diagnostics gave all the components a zero in the assessment, which is odd.
