Dell took over my computer 3 times and ran every diagnostic they had. It shows that the system and all elements are working correctly. They updated BIOS and the chip set. They downloaded and installed Win 10 from Microsoft. The diagnostics showed what was installed when I bought it and what it has now. The dvd drive is present when I bought it and now it shows no dvd drive. I have since bought an external dvd drive and hooked it up today and it works fine. Win 10 recognized it right away. So whatever the problem is it is most likely a corrupted file or something.
Dvd/cd-rw drive stopped being recognized by win 10
dvd/cd-rw drive stopped being recognized by win 10 in September 2017. I have a Dell inspiron, which came with the drive. The drive is not in the device manager any longer. It is in bios listed under SATA 2. I have tried all the fixes I have read in community and from microsoft to no avail. I called Microsoft support and after waiting 2 hours on hold the tech hung up on me a few seconds after answering. I contacted Dell and they have reinstalled Win 10 twice and Win 10 will still not recognize the drive. Second issue is since reinstalling Win 10 it will not install one update Update for Windows 10 Version 1709 for x64-based Systems (KB4041994) - Error 0x80070643. It downloads and installs all other updates except this one. I sure could use some help on this since Dell tech couldn't figure it out and Microdoft tech won't try.

Check the system maker's site for drivers and ask their support and forums.
Check to see if it is viable. If that fails the drive may be bad.

2017-12-22T21:39:12+00:00 I went into shell admin and entered the command. It stated it had been completed successfully, rebooted and is still not listed in device manager. I tried your other suggestion and there is no "hardware and sound" option, there is only sound offered. Can't update driver as it does not list drive in device manager. The drive will open and it will spin disc, but will stop as the operating system doesn't recognize the drive. I looked in the drivers folder and it says the drivers were modified on 9/29/17 and that is when Windows stopped recognizing it.

D. If needed let's test the CD/DVD drive to see if it works at all :
Try this to see if the drive is viable at all (you will need to make these on
another computer since your's will not start - XP, Vista, 7, 8/8.1, or 10
or even running Linux does not matter). You could also try booting with
another Windows disk - any OS version though do not use it to do ANY
repairs unless it is absolutely the same version of Windows on your system - just boot to see if the drive works. You can even make a Windows 10 DVD boot disc by running the Windows Media Creation tool (on any computer) - Windows Media Creation Tool (make 32 or 64 both disk same as the OS version you are running.
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-downloa...
Setup/Settings (BIOS/CMOS) often F2 so watch the screen as you boot - set the boot order to CD/DVD first. Remember to set it back when done.
Or try booting to a Linux boot disk.
If the drive will not boot to these then it has failed or there are other hardware issues affecting it. However even it does boot that does not mean there are not some possible hardware issues affect the drive's other functions.
