Windows 10 Sudden Sluggish Performance. 100% memory and disk usage.

So just randomly out of the blue my brand new HP Omen laptop suddently just began to become borderline unresponsive. When I opened up task manager, I’ve noticed that memory and disk usage is consistently near 100%. This is a brand new, top of the line laptop so I know specs are not the issue here. I have also removed the bloatware, so that avenue is not the problem either.

I believe the issue is related to an eccessive amount of Windows 10 “Service Host” processess hogging up all my resources (like over 79 to be exact). I have disabled superfetch in the command prompts and it didn’t make any differences. I have also, turned off windows defender scan scheduling in the task scheduler option. The computer is unusible at the moment as even moving the cursor has delayed response.

I have done a system scan using defender and nothing has been flagged. There is 930 GB free of the 1 TB HHD so I know that it’s not suffering from HHD related issues. I know the suggestion is probably going to be to place a clean install of windows, which I do not have the time to do at the moment (exams coming this week). Is there a windows 10 related issue that is popping up all of a sudden? please help!

I would suggest you to perform clean boot and check if any third party application is causing the conflict. Please follow the instruction mention in link below and check.

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135.

Note: After you have finished troubleshooting, follow these steps to boot to normal startup.

    a) Press the ‘Windows + R’ key on the keyboard.

    b) In the ‘Run’ windows type ’MSCONFIG’ and click ‘Ok’.

    c) On the ‘General’ tab, click the ‘Normal Startup’ option, and then click ‘OK’.

    d) When you are prompted to restart the computer, click ‘Restart’

    Hi Nagendra, nice system !

The number of SvcHost processes is more than likely not the problem. Since the Creators update it is notmal to have 70 - 90 of these running, but the total system resources is minimal . . .

    When your system becomes unresponsive:

Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager

Look for what is running at maximum (Disk, RAM, CPU)

Click the header on the column that is hogging resources

Please provide a screenshot of the processes that end up at the top of the list after clicking on the appropriate header (expand any processes that need to be)

Also, you say you disabled Superfetch in Command Prompt?

Click your Start Button, type services and hit Enter

In the Services App, scroll down and make sure Superfetch is Disabled and not started, if not, that is the place to disable it . . .

So after spending 2 hours+ trying to figure out what was wrong with windows. I finally simply "restarted" my computer instead of "shutting down" and then powering it back up manually. I don't know what the issue was or how it was resolved by doing a restart vs. shut down but it completely solved my problems. System is back to stable and usage levels are down to their normal values. This was an un-explainable and incredibly annoying problem as I genuinely cannot think of the source of the initial problem.

The superfetch is still disabled and I will just keep it like that since I plan on upgrading to an M.2 SSD in the coming weeks.
