If that did not work as well, let's try another workaround. Try uninstalling the update and see it it will help. Follow these steps on how to uninstall the update:

    1. Open Settings.
    2. Click Update & Security.
    3. On the left panel, select Windows Update then click View installed update history.
    4. Under View installed update history, click Uninstall updates link.
    5. Look for the update that caused the issue, right-click on it then click Uninstall.

If the issue still persists, we recommend that you contact the device manufacturer directly and have them perform hardware diagnostics to check for any hardware failures.

We're just a post away if you need further help.

Thank you for the information. If rolling back is not possible, then try updating the driver and see if it will work. Follow these steps on how to update the driver:

    1. Open Device Manager.
    2. Look for Universal Serial Bus controllers and click it to expand.
    3. Select the driver, which in your case is the USB x HCI Compliant Host Controller, then right-click on it and select Properties.
    4. Under Driver tab, click the Update Driver button to update the driver.

Once updated, try if the USB ports will now work properly.

If anything comes up, don't hesitate to get back to us anytime.

Unfortunately that doesn't work. I always get the message that I have the most recent update installed. :(

I have now checked in the driver details.

My USB host controller received a Microsoft update on 7th December 2017.

By the 10th December my USB ports although receiving power from my laptop were not being booted by the host controller so it must be assumed that Microsoft update caused this problem.

It does not show in my list of recently updated drivers in the Programs and Features installed updates.

When I go to Device Manager,

USB x HCI Compliant Host Controller,

                           Driver tab the details say

    Driver provider:     Microsoft

    Driver Date:            7/12/2017

    Driver version:       10.0.16299.125

    Digital Signer:        Microsoft Windows

It will NOT allow me to roll back to the previously installed driver.

    In Driver File Details

    Provider:  Microsoft Corporation

    File version:  10.0.16299.15.( WinBuild. 160101.0800)

Copyright:   Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

    Digital signer: Microsoft Windows

    Hi Sandra,

Uninstalled drivers are automatically reinstalled by the system once you restart your computer after you uninstalled the driver. If it's reinstalled automatically, you can check the computer manufacturer's website for the USB x HCI Compliant Host Controller driver compatible to your Windows that you can download and install.

Let us know if you need anything else. We're here to help.
