does the recycle bin take up space on the HDD?

I like to keep files in my Recycle Bin in case I need them again.  There is currently approximately 50GB in my Recycle Bin and my machine would probably run better/faster if I cleaned up the Recycle files somewhat.   BTW, the "search" feature on the start page is unwieldly.

Thanks,

Larry

The Recycle Bin has always been considered a location for storing files you don't need. That means, they are still there using up space. If you don't want the files store there, right click it then click Empty Recycle Bin.

You can also right click the Recycle Bin, click Properties then adjust how space it uses.

Hi Larry, I am Rob, a volunteer and a 10 time and dual award MVP specializing in Windows troubleshooting and Bluescreen analysis. Please remember as volunteers we are not responsible for the development of Windows or the computer hardware and drivers.

Yes, yes the Recycle Bin takes up the allotted space and the files in it are the same size as before deletion. Best not to use the Recycle Bin as a reservoir for file copies. A good backup plan is better and more reliable.
