Can't connect Microsoft Lumia 650 to Windows 10 PC

Hi there,

I'm having an issue connecting my Microsoft Lumia 650 to my Windows 10 PC via USB. I can locate it under "Other devices" in Device Manager, however, I cannot find it in file explorer. I have already tried updating the phone drives by doing the following steps:

  • Go to Microsoft Update download catalog page (link works only in IE) http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/site/home.aspx.
  • Search for Windows Phone WinUSB.
  • Add the driver to the shopping basket and press view basket to continue the checkout.
  • Download the file to your computer.
  • Browse to the file you downloaded and extract downloaded .cab file with for example Winzip.
  • In Device manager click Update Driver software, select Browse my computer for driver software, search for the directory you extracted the files and click Next.
  • Reconnect your Lumia phone, and check the status in Device Manager.

The driver software is not recognised at all.

Any ideas how to fix the issue?

Thanks in advance.

    1. On your computer, do you have the Windows Media Player installed? That is required for the MTP driver.
    2. On your computer, do you have the Recovery Tool installed? That installs the remaining drivers.
    3. Windows » Control Panel » (Hardware and Sound ») Device Manager » USB » (do not open but just highlight) your phone » Menu » Action » Update Driver Software.
    4. After removing the microSD from your phone, is your computer able to connect?

I had this problem. I tried a soft reset but it did nothing.

I chatted with a Microsoft rep (BTX) but was told to download USB drivers from my PC maker (Toshiba).

Before doing this I tried a Samsung USB cable for the connection and this installed the correct drivers for Windows Phone App (program) immediately. I was delighted.

Perhaps we should be told more about the need to get the right USB cable (Microsoft approved!!)

After looking at the same problem & doing all sorts of fixes I finally discovered that there are 2 typed of cable, namely Charging only(1) and Data.  Both look the same but only the data cable shows up the phone contents - someone should tell Microsoft

This thread helped me fix the same problem

In that instruction we should select MTP USB driver

but I don't have that driver in the mentioned list as you see:

even though I can not add that
