Windows Defender Verizon Internet Security Suite and Firewall

Today my free Verizon Internet Security suite ran out. I turned on Windows Defender. A notification about virus protection appeared in action center.  A red circle with a white x in center of it with the words virus protection. My firewall is not not on. A popular keeps popping up with an x and virus protection.

What should I do. I'm afraid to use the computer.

Verizon Internet Security is “powered” by McAfee.  If you no longer wish to use the program see the following - - -

If you want to use Windows Defender recommend you uninstall the Verizon/McAfee program, reboot the computer, run the McAfee Removal Tool and again reboot the computer.  List of anti-malware product removal tools

Defender should be enabled though you may have to start the program in Security Center.

    I think so.

I appreciated your very prompt response to my query.  Although the steps seemed simple enough, I did not feel comfortable doing them myself.  I made an appointment with the Microsoft Help Desk.  I tried to show them your reply, but they had their own solution, which I think was very similar.  I am just back from my appointment and so far, I have not seen any messages and the firewall is on.

This community is AWESOME.  I really appreciate it's support.
