After update all text/fonts changed to "Wingdings" & PC is unresponsive

(If needed I can upload a picture of what it looks like)

Hi to who reads this!

My computer had been bugging me for an update that I kept delaying, but because of a glitch in a program I had to restart and then the update was pushed through. The last time this happened it was for the Windows 10 update and all my new documents and files had been overwritten but this time my computer showed all the text/fonts in something similar to the Wingdings/Dingbats font. Meaning everything is unreadable.

After some time searching how to fix this problem I found multiple people with the same problem and for them it helped to get a working fonts-folder from a "normal Windows 10 system" and to overwrite the corrupted one using a flashdisk.

The problem is my computer seems unresponsive when I try to open a program or even the command center so I can't try this. The screen is also flickering.

Does anyone know how to fix this?

    That is strange.

Which version of Windows 10 is currently installed? See how to verify:

    https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wik...

Which version and edition Windows did you originally upgrade from?

Windows 7 Starter, Home Basic, Home Premium, Windows 8.0 Core, Windows 8.1 Windows 7 Professional, Windows 7 Ultimate, Windows 8.0 Pro, Windows 8.1 Pro

Try these first to see if they work:

    Open Start, type: CMD

    Right click CMD

    Click Run as administrator

Type in at the prompt OR Copy and Paste these one at a time : (Hit enter after each)

    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth

    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth

    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Also run the System File Checker utility:

    Open Start, type: CMD

    Right click CMD

    Click Run as administrator

At the Command Prompt, type: sfc/scannow

This will check for any integrity violations

    Restart your system

If that does not work, try performing a repair upgrade:

Thank you so much for your quick reply!

To show what I mean with "I can't read anything" I added a picture of the "prompt". I don't know how to run it as an administrator.

    Go to a working computer.

    Open Notepad

Copy and paste the following into it:

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Fonts] "Segoe UI (TrueType)"=""

    "Segoe UI Bold (TrueType)"=""

    "Segoe UI Italic (TrueType)"=""

    "Segoe UI Bold Italic (TrueType)"=""

    "Segoe UI Semibold (TrueType)"=""

    "Segoe UI Light (TrueType)"=""

    "Segoe UI Symbol (TrueType)"=""

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\FontSubstitutes]

    "Segoe UI"="Webdings"

    Save it as fix.reg

Copy it to problem computer then double click it.

    When complete, reboot.

I'm Greg, a volunteer installation specialist and 8 year Windows MVP, here to help you.

You can roll back Fall Creators Update Version 1709 to the older version until it matures: http://www.thewindowsclub.com/rollback-uninstal...

Then hide the Update using the Hide Update Tool so it doesn't try to force itself: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3073930

If you want to try to reform it first go over this checklist to make sure the install is set up correctly, optimized for best performance, and any needed repairs get done: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki...

If any steps cannot be performed normally then try them in Safe Mode with Networking: https://www.digitalcitizen.life/4-ways-boot-saf...

But remember that Factory or Upgrade installs are inferior installs which most enthusiasts won't even run because they'd expect endless issues. Consider doing the Clean Install in this link which compiles the best possible install that will stay that way as long as you stick with the tools and methods given: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki...

There is also an automated Refresh that reinstalls WIndows while shedding corrupting factory bloatware, saves your files, but doesn't clear the drive to get it cleanest: https://www.howtogeek.com/265054/how-to-easily-...

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and let us know how it goes. I will keep working with you until it's resolved.
