HP Laserjet 1200 printer does not work after December 2017 Windows 10 update

My HP Laserjet 1200 printer is no longer functional for printing after the most recent WIN 10 (64 bit) update was loaded (yesterday).

In the list of printers & scanners, it was shown with the comment "Driver no longer available". The printer was NOT listed under device manager.

I downloaded the current universal driver from HP's website, but the computer does not recognize the printer.

It is and has always been connected to the PC via USB cable.

Thank you for the detailed response. I had tried to load a universal driver from HP's website before I posted the question. I also deleted the printer from the list of printers.

When I restarted the computer the next day, the printer was back on the list, and accessible when I tried to print from other programs. I will save the procedure for future reference.

You may have to manually install the USB DOT4 driver to get this to work. Here's the link for Windows 10 64-bit.... http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software13/COL44939/fp-148007-1/Dot4x64.msi

    Try reinstalling the Printer.

    Right-click Start and select Run.

In the Run dialog box, type in control printers and press OK.

Locate your printer in the Printers section, Right click it and select Remove device.

    Restart your PC.

If you have a setup media of the Printer driver(This is usually a CD or Setup program supplied with the Printer), run the utility and let the Printer Install.

If you do not have a setup media, try adding a printer manually using "add a printer" button in the menu bar. It should automatically detect and Install the Printer.

After the Printer Installs, try printing a test page to see if it works as desired.

    Retry the task again.

Hi Roy. I'm Greg, a volunteer installation specialist and 8 year Windows MVP, here to help you.

Rather than spending too much more time fiddling I'd simply Clean Reinstall the printer which always works, lasts longer and actually saves time:

    1. Power up the printer, if wired unplug it's USB cable from PC.
    2. Right click Start button in Windows 8/10 to open Apps and Features (or in Windows 7 type it in Start Search) to Uninstall all the printer software. Restart.
    3. Next copy and paste in Start search box: printui /s /t2 (Note that there is one space before each forward slash).
    4. Right click result to Run as Administrator.
    5. Open the Print Server properties, Remove the printer’s drivers for this printer and for any other printers you don't use presently. If you get a message about access denied or the printer being in use and you cannot find the driver or any installed program that would account for this, you may restart the computer in a diagnostic startup and then use the printui command to remove the driver package(s): https://www.isunshare.com/windows-10/enable-dia...

You must restart back to normal mode before you will be able to install the printer again.

    1. Now type Control Panel in Start Search, open CP, choose Icon View. In Control Panel open Devices and Printers, right click the printer to delete the Printer and any scanner or fax of the same name. Restart PC.
    2. Go to the printer model’s Support Downloads webpage to download and install the basic driver. If a wireless printer you will need the full software package to get it set up fully. If you want to be able to scan from the printer top to the PC then you'll also need the full package. On HP PC's the Support Assistant can select the driver for you if you run it.
    3. Extract Printer software, right click Setup file to Run as Administrator. Follow the setup screens closely as you install the software. For USB it should prompt when to plug in the printer.

If you have further problems reply back with results of each step.
