USB Drive Access Permission

Anonymous
2018-01-28T07:26:27+00:00

I am unable to access any USB drives that I attach to my PC. The drive will show up File Explorer, but I always get a message;

-----> "You don't currently have permission to access this folder. Click Continue to permanently get access to this folder".

Once I click on "Continue" I get a message saying;

-----> "You have been denied permission to access this folder. To gain access to this folder you will need to use thesecurity tab"

I click on the "Security Tab"hyperlink, but the "Properties"view does not have a "Security Tab".

I have tried multiple different USB drives, in different formats, and into different USB connections (Directly into PC) and every USB drive gets the same result. I have even tried formatting drives, but this doesn't help. All these drives are fine though if I try to access them on another PC or Mac.

Any ideas. All suggestions I have read on the web seem to rely on the security tab.

My Setup details include:

Profile Type: Administrator

Windows: Windows 10 Pro (Updated only today)

Moved from:  Windows / Windows 10 / Files, folders, & storage

Windows for home | Windows 10 | Devices and drivers

    Hi,

    Let's take care of your concern. Since you just recently updated to Windows 10 Pro, it's possible that the issue is with the USB driver. There may have been software conflicts or incompatibility. I suggest checking the USB driver through Device Manager and see if there are pending updates. You can do this by going to Device Manager > Universal Serial Bus controllers >right-click on your your USB driver and select Properties > on the Driver tab select Update Driver. If that did not work, try downloading the driver from the manufacturer's website and see if it helps.

    Looking forward to your response.

    Hi Radney,

                     I have an issue here also. When I right click on a USB drive I only get the following tab options;

    i.e.: The security tab does not appear.

    I can go to the "Sharing" tab --> Ädvanced Sharing...", but here I find that everyone already has sharing permission.

    Still no change to getting "No Permission"message after this.

    Hi Radney,

                     Thanks so much for your reply. You are right in the fact that this is my first experience of Windows 10. I did use windows up until about 7 years ago, and have been on Mac's of work Windows 2000 systems ever since.

    I attempted your two suggestions. The method of Universal Serial Bus Controllers --> Properties ---> Driver ---> Update Driver was a no go. I can get to the point of Right Clicking on the Universal Serial Bus Controllers ---> Properties. At this point I get a window with only a "General" tab. Universal Serial Bus controllers can not be selected.

    As my device is a HP Elite Slice I have used the HP support assistant to download any updates and driver updates. This also appears to have not changed anything.

    I forgot to mention that you need to click the arrow key next to the Universal Serial Bus controllers to expand the selection. See the image for your reference:

    If this step does not work. I suggest that you try the option to Roll Back Driver on the same Properties window, and the last thing to do if that fails too is to download a fresh driver from HP's website instead of downloading or updating it through HP assistant.

    Keep us posted.
