High Idle power consumption

I'm facing battery drain issues. i have a 40whr battery and the company claims it lasts upto 8hrs. but it doesnt even last 4hrs on idle. And i installed batterybar to see the discharge rate. At idle its around 9 to 12mwh and its almost same when i run edge on it. Here is where it gets wierd. When i run CATIA (its an cad/cam software) the power discharge rate falls to 5 to 7mwh. I assumed it was due to the pixel density. But when i run edge with catia in the background, the discharge rate is 6 to 9mwh. Any clue why? Im pretty sure this can last longer.

Laptop specs:-

Asus vivobook s510un

I5-8250u

8gb ddr4 2400mhz

Nvidia mx150

Edit: Microsoft edge with nothing in the background draws 10mwh of power, but with CATIA it draws only 6mwh. As a temporary fix i am running CATIA in the background for longer battery backup. The same goes with chrome and Microsoft word. The instant i close CATIA the power draw goes up.

with CATIA:

Yes, this is a newly purchased device. Previously i had faced startup issues and had to clean boot windows. But i had faced the draining issues from the beginning. And recently( after a month from purchase) i noticed this. No other updates are pending. I have disabled my antivirus. Im using the default balanced power plan with 2 changes. 1) LPM in maximum power savings and 2) allow computer to sleep under media sharing. I did this to solve the startup and shutdown issue. At idle there is a system process that is running in the background. But that uses around 5% of my cpu.

Also with CATIA running in the background and with mild usage ( viewing PDFs + browsing web) the battery backup is between 6.5 to 7 hrs.

    Hi,

A laptop in idle still drains the battery. It can be one of the lists below are the reasons why your discharging faster.

    • The power plan is on High-Performance. It consumes more energy because it maximizes the computer's usage. Toggle it as Balanced by going to Control Panel > System and Security > Power Options.
    • Too many background applications running. We can check this by going to Windows Settings > System > Battery saver > Battery usage by app. You can set adjust the settings of your battery there as well. Also, please follow the tips on the window on how you can manage your battery.
    • You use the second graphics card as your display to an external monitor.
    • Using sleep mode instead of hibernate mode. Hibernate mode is advisable to use when stepping away from the device for very long.

In addition to this, you can run the automatic troubleshooter to find and fix problems with your computer's power settings to conserve power and extend battery life.

Feel free to post back if you need further help.

    Hi Nikkilesh,

This could be due to applications running in the background. For us to effectively assist you, kindly provide us the information we need below:

    • Is this a newly purchased device?
    • When did the issue start? Have you made any significant changes to your computer that could have triggered the issue?
    • Have you checked if you have any other pending updates on your computer?
    • To remove any possibilities of unsuccessful updates, are you using any third-party antivirus programs? If yes, have you tried to disable them and check for any necessary updates?
    • Have you checked the Task Manager if there are any applications that you don't use but is running in the background?
    • Are you using custom power plans?

We are looking forward to your response.
