All of a sudden today, when I put my cursor in the box on the task bar that says type here to search to the right of the MS icon, the box turns totally black and I'm not able to enter anything. WHat is wrong and will this self correct? If not, how do i fix it? I don't want to turn off my laptop. It might start unwanted updates AND yesterday the cursor was frozen with the screen and i unplugged the power and just waited until it moved.

First question is what is more important right now. I have no other devices to access the internet. Thank you

    Run the Start menu troubleshooter:

    http://aka.ms/diag_StartMenu

    If that does not work:

    Press Windows key + X

    Click Task Manager

    Select the Processes tab

Scroll down to Windows Explorer then select it

    Click Restart

    If that does not work:

    uninstall your display driver:

    Press Windows key + X

    Click Device Manager

    Expand Display adapters

Right click the current display adapter

    Click Uninstall

    Exit Device Manager

    Restart

I went into the task manager and ended Cortana and that solved it . Thank you for your answer. Next time I'll look more on my own before coming here. :)
