Hello everyone and thank you for taking the time out of your day to try to help me with my issue.

The issue that I am currently experiencing is that I can not get to my desktop. The situation started around a year ago when my computer, I am currently typing this on my laptop, when it could not complete a Windows update. I thought nothing of it since I have always had issues with this custom-built PC and just went on with my day for several months. That was until about 3 weeks ago now when a pop-up came up on my computer that was forcing me to do the update because after completing the update, it needed to do a necessary Security Update for the PC. I just let it try the download again for the rest of the night. What ended up happening is that it would download the update, restart my computer and would attempt to install and then “crash” and have to restore to a previous version. After not working about 3 times, I would then just open Task Manager and force close the update so that it would not go through this process. I did this for about a week. That was until I came home from work about two weeks ago now and my computer was stuck on the Windows Logo. I assumed that it tried to install the update while I was gone, and it didn’t work and was attempting to restore to a previous version. So, I let it do its thing but nothing changed. I then restart my computer and it gets stuck in a loop of doing this seen in the YouTube video I have attached:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kGappjy3lds

The first 40 seconds are normal for start-up even though I have a SSD

Until 3:20 is just sitting on Windows logo (can skip it this part of the video)

The last 40 seconds is to just show what happens when you “press any key” on that screen and what it says

The flash on the screen at approximately 3:35 is a window that opens that says “winpeshl.exe” then goes away

I have done some research already regarding the “Automatic Repair Loop” and have attached all repairs that I have already attempted and the outcome of each

Using the Windows Installation Media on a USB Drive:

  • System Restore
    • To use System Restore, you must specify which Windows installation to restore
    • Restart this computer, select an operating system, and then select System Restore
  • System Image Recovery
    • Windows cannot find a system image on this computer.
    • Attach the backup hard disk or insert the final DVD from a backup set and click Retry. Alternatively, close this dialog for more options
  • Startup Repair
    • Diagnosing PC for about 5 seconds
    • Startup Repair couldn’t repair your PC
      • Press “Advanced options” to try other options to repair your PC or “Shut Down” to turn off your PC. Log File: blank
  • Command Prompt
    • Sfc /scannow
      • Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations
    • Chkdsk /r c:
      • Windows has scanned the file system and found no problems
    • Chkdsk /r d:
      • Windows has scanned the file system and found no problems
  • Go back to the previous version
    • We ran into a problem and won’t be able to take you back to the previous version of Windows. Try resetting your PC instead

Using the Microsoft Windows 8 Pro Installation Media (Original OS):

  • Refresh Your PC
    • The drive where Windows is installed is locked. Unlock your drive and try again.
  • System Restore
    • To use System Restore, you must specify which Windows installation to restore
    • Restart this computer, select an operating system, and then select System Restore
  • System Image Recovery
    • Windows cannot find a system image on this computer.
    • Attach the backup hard disk or insert the final DVD from a backup set and click Retry. Alternatively, close this dialog for more options
  • Startup Repair
    • Diagnosing PC for about 5 seconds
    • Startup Repair couldn’t repair your PC
      • Press “Advanced options” to try other options to repair your PC or “Shut Down” to turn off your PC. Log File: blank
  • Reset Your PC
    • Unable to reset your PC. A required drive partition is missing

And if it matters, I am able to get to BIOS. I will be able to answer any further questions to the best of my ability. Thank you everyone.

Sorry for any typos.

Hello again,

If Windows is installed on "C" SSD then that is the drive you would want to delete and reinstall Windows on.  Leave the "D" drive alone...don't delete it when you perform the Custom Installation.

Please familiarize yourself thoroughly with Andre Da Costa's article on the Custom Installation until you feel entirely comfortable with it.  This may take several readings and examinations of his illustrations so that you are prepared for this custom installation.

You don't want to delete the drive with your data...in this case your "D" HDD.

During installation it will ask you where you want to install Windows....select your "C" SSD.

But most importantly, read and re-read the article on the custom installation  from Andre below. https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-windows_install-winpc/how-to-perform-a-custom-installation-of-windows/38adfa8c-32f8-4354-8c53-13b5f2cf7e44

You can also respond to his article in the comments section, and he will personally answer your questions that you might have.

Regards

As I have previously stated unless I am misunderstanding you, I have attempted a System Restore with both Windows Installation Media on a USB Drive and also Microsoft Windows 8 Pro Installation Media and with both attempts, it says "To use System Restore, you must specify which Windows installation to restore. Restart this computer, select an operating system, and then select System Restore."

Thank you for the information. If you’re having trouble booting the device, we suggest performing a system restore. System restore will take your PC to an earlier point in time. You may refer to this support article: Recovery options in Windows 10. Check the section Restore from a system restore point as a guide on how to perform the said troubleshooting.

We’ll be waiting for any updates regarding the issue.

Hello Arthur and thank you for the reply. I will begin by saying that I have updated the YouTube link so if you would like to try that again, it should work for you or anyone that attempts to help me. And I believe after watching this video, you will see that the Windows Update troubleshooter will not work since it is downloaded on the PC with the issue. I can't download it on the PC with the issue because I cannot even get to my home screen on my PC.

    Hi,

This could be due to a corrupted update file during the download. As initial troubleshooting we suggest running the Windows Update troubleshooter. The said troubleshooter will automatically look for any issues on the update and once done, you may try running the Windows Update again and install the update for your PC.

We appreciate the details provided and the effort to research, troubleshoot and attempt to resolve the concern. We’ve tried checking the YouTube link that you’ve provided to get a better idea of the issue. However, we’re receiving this error once we visit the link.

We’ll be waiting for any updates regarding the issue.
