I'm using onenote 2016 and Windows 10. Already tried a lot of ways, including disable it in the task manager and delete the shortcut in the startup folder. But it still automatically opens when windows is on.

    Hi,

Are you referring to the Send to OneNote tool from the icon in system tray? You can uncheck the start with OneNote option. This should stop the tool from making an appearance every time you start Windows. Kindly follow the steps below:

Open OneNote > File > Options. Now under Display, uncheck the Place OneNote icon in the notification area of the taskbar.

If this doesn't work for you and since you have tried several troubleshooting steps to disable automatic startup of OneNote, we recommend that you perform a repair of your Office application, and try to disable it again from the Startup programs. For guidance on how to do the repair, kindly visit the link provided here: Repair an Office application.

After trying to stop Send to Onenote from starting in Task Manager and ridding it from the system tray I finally found the solution -- sort of. It was in C:\Windows\Users\name\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup. I removed it from that folder and the problem was solved temporarily. A couple of days later Onenote reappeared in that folder and I had to remove it again. I wish MS would do something about this. It seems to be a very common annoyance.

Before you delete the shortcut, right click it and open file location. Right click on onenotem.exe and change it to onenotem01.exe.

Thank you for the solution to this. I think that it is a very annoying default setting for OneNote because it just hinders me from getting on with my work.
