"VSS" and "SPP" logs and the error code 0x81000019 A shadow copy could not be created.

Im having problems backing up my files in windows 7 . I get the message "VSS" and "SPP" logs and the error code 0x81000019   A shadow copy could not be created. Please check VSS and SPP application event logs for more info.

Well, I have read many similar threads and no one seems to be given a proper answer to this issue. THey just get the same idiotic run-around questions "Is your disc plugged in - please check this" and "please check that there is enough space.

The other favourite response seems to be where the replier has completely ignored the comments made by the original poster, and then asks the OP to do stuff that they have already listed as checked/done and ticked off the list. Seriously, what a load of rubbish..

So..

SPP is started. I have tried it on, off, automatic.

VSS is started, I have restarted it, tried it on, off.

I have 1.36 terabytes of free space on a new and formatted (this morning) NTFS disc which is my destination for the back up.

The back up fails every time with the following message:

"A shadow copy could not be created. Please check VSS and SPP application event logs for more info"

I am not entirely sure that I know where to find the "VSS and SPP" logs, and having googled four times now, and not found anything I am kind of stuck.

Can anyone help with this very frustrating problem? I am so fed up with Microsoft and it's shoddy half-baked OS.

Thank you for your reply. Having already searched online for a solution I had already read both of those links you submitted. In fact both of those links state things I had already checked and tested.

I use Avast, and I disabled that. It made no difference.

However, I did not try a clean boot option.

To be perfectly honest I do not have the time to try half a dozen different things that may or may not work every single time I need my Windows machine to do something it was designed to do. Frankly, it is a shoddy product and the worst thing to come out of Microsoft since Vista.

I have been using Microsoft at admin level from DOS 5 onwards and never has a client based OS been so damn awkward to use or so prone to failure. Help files are useless, online resources are contradictory and inaccurate, forums like this provide "hit and miss" scatterbomb guidance - never in my 25 years of using Microsoft has a windows user had such a dark day as where we are with vista and what came after.

To save my sanity,  I downloaded a backup management tool instead and I have opted to use this because Microsoft's products are just not up to the job and I cannot spend hours of my day figuring out why something doesn't work all the time. I would like to be able to just click "Hey windows do this thing for me - you know, the thing you were designed to do"....and then have windows do it, alas, it just doesn't work like that and so, better to just not use MS.

    Hi,

The "VSS and SPP logs and the error code 0x81000019 A shadow copy could not be created" usually occurs if  Volume Shadow Copy and SPP Notification Service is not started and not set to automatic, and the volume is not formatted as NTFS. However, since you've performed some troubleshooting steps (such as SPP/VSS is started, on, off and your hard drive is newly formatted to NTFS, we suggest checking the following thread for more steps.

    1. Windows backup Error-"A shadow copy could not be created. Please check 'VSS' and 'SPP' application event logs"
    2. windows 7 backup error "shadow copy could not be created"

Please post back with the result for further assistance.
