Missing dvd/cd-rom

Within Device Manager there should be listed between Display Adapters and Human Interface the DVD/CD-Rom option.

For some reason that I am unable to fathom this is missing from my computer.

My DVD/CD Rom is shown within the system bios as it is used as the boot device but it is not present in My Computer

The DVD/CD Rom is functioning correctly when connected to another machine.

I suspect there is a registry error causing this issue but I am at a loss as of how to remedy this problem.

I cannot run the windows install/repair CD due to this issue....

Any help would be great..thanks

    Hi [martin-Ace],

This problem may be caused by two Windows registry entries that have become corrupted. I suggest that you use the Registry Editor to delete the corrupted Registry entries.

Note: This method contains steps on how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow the steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, you may refer to this Microsoft article. Then, proceed with the steps below:

    1. Press the Windows key + R to open the Run dialog box.
    2. Type regedit in the Run dialog box, then press Enter. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or select Allow.
    3. In the navigation pane, locate and then select the following registry subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} 4. In the right pane, select UpperFilters.

Note***:** You may also see an UpperFilters.bak registry entry. You do not have to remove that entry. ClickUpperFilters only. If you do not see the UpperFilters registry entry, you still might have to remove the LowerFilters registry entry. To do this, go to step 7.* 5. On the Edit menu, select Delete. 6. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, select Yes. 7. In the right pane, select LowerFilters. 8. On the Edit menu, select Delete. 9. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, select Yes. 10. Exit Registry Editor. 11. Restart the computer.

Let us know how it goes.

    Hello,

If you have installed Windows 10 update, the action might have reset, and restored some settings to an earlier state. Hence, resulting to the issue at hand. To help you resolve this, may we the make and model of your DVD/CD-Rom drive? Also, may we know if you are using an SATA, or if you are using an IDE cable to connect it to your PC?

The DVD/CD-Rom option might have been hidden. To show hidden (Unhide) CD/DVD Devices in Windows 10, kindly follow these steps:

    1. Navigate to This PC.
    2. Click Manage; then select Device Manager.
    3. Hit View, and then click Show hidden devices.

    1. Locate the DVD/CD-ROM drives and IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers items. Right-click on each entry present under both "DVD/CD-ROM drives" and "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers" sections one by one and select Uninstall.

Thanks for the update. If you're not seeing these registry entries, I would suggest creating a registry subkey. Again, I advise that you back up the registry for added protection.

To create the registry subkey, follow these steps:

    1. Launch the Registry Editor.
    2. In the navigation pane, locate the following registry subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\atapi 3. Right-click atapi, point to New, then select Key. 4. Type Controller0, and then press Enter. 5. Right-click Controller0, point to New, and then select DWORD(32-bit) Value. 6. Type EnumDevice1, and then press Enter. 7. Right-click EnumDevice1, select Modify(... ). 8. Type 1 in the Value data box, and then select OK. 9. Exit Registry Editor. 10. Restart the computer.

    Keep us posted.

    Thank you for your response

I am using windows 7 Home Premium 64bit operating system and haven't updated to windows 10

I believe the error within Device Manager stems from the motherboard CMOS battery failure/Real Time Clock

Having replaced battery/power up to bios resetting time and date it was only then that I discovered I had lost the CD-Rom drive from Computer/ Hard Disk Drives..venturing into Device Manager only to discover the DVD/CD-ROM Drives option was missing.

CD-Rom is also missing from Disk Management.

Could this be a registry corruption issue?
