no mouse driver in Windows 10

The mouse I had been using went dead so i replaced it with another HP one, just a generic version.  When it failed to provide a pointer I started to research the problem.  Turns out there is no longer a mouse driver installed.

Have tried everything that I could research, even reinstalled windows.  Still no mouse driver.

Have a HP Compaq 7800 with Windows 10 Pro

any and all suggestions appreciated.

    Hi,

An outdated or incompatible mouse driver can be one of the factors why this issue occurs. To assist you with your concern, we recommend that you follow these steps to check if the device is recognized correctly in Device Manager. To do this, follow the steps below:

    1. In the Search box, type Device Manager and press Enter.
    2. Navigate to Mice and other pointing devices.
    3. A yellow exclamation means that the mouse driver is not installed properly. You can right-click and select Uninstall.
    4. Right-click on Mice and other pointing devices and select Scan for hardware change.
    5. If the yellow exclamation mark still exists, go to their support site to search your product name and find the corresponding mouse driver to install and update.

Note: If there are no pointing devices, it indicates that there is no mouse configured or it is a mouse hardware failure. We suggest that you contact your system manufacturer to report the status of the device and to identify if this is a hardware related issue.

Let us know if you need further assistance.

    Thanks for your reply Sher,

The latter part of your post applies in my case, mice and pointing devices is not listed under device manager.

    My next question would be...

Are there downloads available that would reinstall the mouse device?  Either existing or when installing a new wireless mouse?

I'm not a tech person so forgive me if I'm thinking too simplistic.

    Hello again, Sher,

Tried a new wireless mouse with no success.  No software included in the package which I assume is normal these days.

Also looked into system manufacturer, HP.  They do not provide download support on my PC (HP Compaq dc7800 convertible minitower) since it was purchased prior to August 2013, and since it now is running Windows 10.  This is from their support.hp.com site.

They put it back on Microsoft stating:

"Microsoft has made most of the component drivers for these products available via Device Manager once the product is running Windows 10 with an active Internet connection."

Phone support would not assist since it is out of warranty.

Hard to believe something so simple has apparently become an unrepairable issue.

Usually, when your purchase a wireless mouse there is a CD installer that came with the package. If not, we recommend that you visit their support website and search for the model number of your device. We also recommend contacting your device manufacturer to get additional information on how to obtain a copy of the driver.

Give us an update with the outcome.
