CBS log is HUGE and taking up my entire disk!

Help!

A few days ago, I had more than 300 GB free on my hard drive.  Today, I started getting errors saying that I was out of disk space.  After some checking, it's the CBS file in c:\windows\logs\CBS -- it's 180 GB+ and apparently growing.

What's causing this and how do I make it stop?

I have a Dell XPS running Windows 10.  My machine was acting funny a few weeks ago so I wiped it, did a clean install of Windows 10, is fully patched/updated, with Office365 and little else.

Any advice?  Appreciate any pointers anyone can offer.

I believe you're correct that this is an issue with Windows Update. Since disabling Windows Update in Services, the CBS log file is no longer being filled until my SDD reaches capacity.

A way of carrying out this fix for anyone reading:

    1. Start Task Manager.
    2. Navigate to 'Details' tab.
    3. End 'TiWorker' and 'TrustedInstaller' processes.
    4. Go to Services.
    5. Locate Windows Update and Stop this service.
    6. Install Update KB4056892 manually.
    7. You should now be able to restart the Windows Update service without your CBS log file being written to in the way that has been causing problems.

    Hey,

i am pretty sure Windows Update was making the logfile huge (several GB/hour, full ssd half a day) because it failed at installing the update i mentioned in my last post. This update, as written in its update notes, fixes a bug with updates not installing properly paired with increased cpu+hd activity (Windows Update writing highspeed logs).

The update fixes the problem, you just have to install it manually.

    copied from my last post:

    How i fixed it:

I manually downloaded Update KB4056892, but was not able to install it since Windows Update Service was busy writing logs.

Then i restarted my Computer (reset) and started the update-installer right after booting into Windows, hoping to start it before the Windows Update Service started, and it worked! Problem solved for me. Might work for others aswell.

    Update Notes KB4056892: (January 3rd 2018)

Addresses issue where update installation may stop at 99% and may show elevated CPU or disk utilization. This occurs if a device was reset using the Reset this PC functionality after installing KB4054022.

Same Problem here, performant PC, Fresh installed Win10 by its own fresh install tool (dont know its english name).

CBS.log growing until SSD is full, WindowsUpdate not able to install KB4056892 (hanging at 99%, ironically this patch should fix a bug with updates hanging at 99% after a fresh install with the windows tool).

    update install error 0x8024000b,

    win10 professional,

    i5 3570k

    16gb ram

    edit:

might be worth to mention that i can't end Windows Update Service via Services.msc,

    Error 1053: not responding.

CPU idling on ~33%, SSD writing 500KB - 6MB /s on average, no Network Traffic.

On shutdown, there is a high Chance of the System hanging while it is preparing Windows. I Let it run 4h without success.

OK- finally some headway. Thanks to David McGuinees advice in this thread. With his instructions as follows I was able to install update KB4056892. Now I will wait to see if the hard drive keeps filling up. I;ll update if it worked later,

This new update is out if you did not see my prior reference (KB4058258).

It also installs a Service Stack so the newest update may take care of your situation..
