    Hi,

It is possible that there's a third-party application that conflicts with the Microsoft Windows System Protection background tasks. The .exe extension on a filename indicates an executable file. Executable files may, in some cases, harm your computer.

To assist you in resolving your concern, we suggest that you perform a clean boot. It helps eliminate software conflicts that occur when you install a program or an update or when you run a program in Windows 10. For the steps, click here.

I am trying to resolve this very same issue.

23 Feb 2018 - The problem has reappeared. There are three Microsoft Windows System Protection background tasks running and multiplying on my machine.  I tried the earlier steps "chkdsk, dism" but after each reboot the tasks reappear immediately.

16 Feb 2018 - Later in the day

Used "Virtual Agent" on Microsoft support site. I tried many questions but the Virtual Agent was not able to understand the issue I was describing and therefore was not of much help. However, interestingly and to my utter surprise, it offered to connect me to a "real person". Of course, I immediately jumped on the offer.  Once I got connected with the live MS Support Agent (Agent). I had to go through a "consent" procedure before the Agent could access my machine. This procedure had some technical hiccups but were resolved with minimal inconvenience.

I must first state that my experience with the "live" MS Support was extremely positive. The interaction with the support Agent was professional and pleasant. Agent appeared not only to be technically competent but also appeared to be socially trained. With my consent Agent took remote-control of my computer and ran the following commands:

    • chkdsk (Note: Couldn't catch all the options used)
    • dism /online /cleanup_image /restorehealth

The machine rebooted many time and eventually the Agent disconnected from my machine. The problem seems to be resolved. But I will wait for one week before considering the above as a resolution to the issue.

    16 Feb 2018

OS Windows 10 Pro Build 1707

Multiple "Microsoft Windows System Protection background tasks" are running on my system and eating up all my CPU.

At this very moment there are 3 such processes running.  It usually starts with 1 and overtime increase to 3 or even 5 identical processes.

The name of file associated with these process is SrTasks.exe.

Please note that the file is signed by Microsoft - It does not appear to be coming from a third-party software.

I have tried many solutions including a clean boot but these tasks always reappear after a few minutes to a few hours.

At this moment after a clean boot with all other services disabled there are three Microsoft Windows System Protection background tasks running on my computer.

Do you have any other suggestions?

    Try restart your PC.

Make sure report this issue through Feedback Hub app.

...which is done every time I'm finished with it (Shut Down; restart later) which makes absolutely no difference.

    What's a "Feedback Hub app."?

I would like to point out that as of now, this "process" has replicated itself and is now consuming nearly 100%...
