Error: "The folder cannot be moved..."

Hi!

I want to move user files (documents, desktop etc.) to another partition. I found an article about that - "Move your Windows 10 libraries to a separate drive or partition" - at https://www.pcworld.com/article/3025345/windows/move-your-windows-10-libraries-to-a-separate-drive-or-partition.html

  • but that procedure didn't really work. First I moved most of the folders in C:\Users<my name>. But there is a sub-directory named OneDrive which seems to contain 'the real' user-file-directories. So using the guiding in the above mentioned article, I first 'unlinked' OneDrive. But when I try to move the directories inside the OneDrive-directory (one by one), I get an error message which - translated from Danish - goes like this:

"The folder cannot be moved to here - The folder cannot be moved, because there is a folder, which cannot be redirected, in the same location.

Access denied."

And it doesn't help to change the name of the folder slightly at the destination drive. So what do I do now?

PS: It's a brand new Lenovo Thinkpad L570 with Windows 10 Pro.

Best regards,

Henrik R.

OK. The fix involves modifying the registry. You can do it yourself or use a downloaded .reg file. Manual instructions and a .reg file can both be found here:

    http://www.winhelponline.com/blog/shell-folders-merged-music-videos-same-folder/

If you use the .reg file, it will folders you have moved to their original location, but will not delete your new folders or move your files. But after merging the .reg file, the Location tab and Move button should allow you to make your desired changes without any problems.

    Good Luck,

    Keith

    Henrik,

So sorry you're having trouble. Can't believe no one has recognized your problem, it's relatively common (sadly).

You need to perform a registry edit to remove the entries preventing you from moving your folders. I'm at work right now, not at my WIn10 machine. Will post back in a few hours.

Now I have tried again. This time I get the following error:

    “The folder is in use

The action could not be accomplished, because the folder or a file in it is open in another program.

Close the folder or the file, and try again.”

But even if I restart windows and only open 2 instances of File Explorer (also called Pathfinder...), to move the folder, I get the same error again...

Windows is becoming extremely annoying, tiresome and time-consuming.

To be sure that I know exactly what I am doing, and to be able to explain it, I have described the whole procedure here: http://transformation.dk/Real-procedure.odt

It worked for “Billeder” (Photos), but not for Documents.

    Please help!

    Hi Henrik,

Moving the user folder or files into another partition will not allow the user to upgrade Windows 10 to the next build. Microsoft recommend not to change the location of the user profile directories or program data folders. However, if you want to proceed, we suggest that you check the Discussion regarding "How to: Move Your User Library Folder to Another Drive" through this link.

Let us know if the information helps.

    Hi

    Thank you for your reply.

I have read the page you refer to. My only question is if there is any problem in only moving the specific sub-folders that contain user files (like Documents and Desktop) to the other partition?

(There are quite good reasons for only having the OS and installed apps (and files 'belonging' to the apps) on the C: drive and everything else on another partition. But that's a long story. I have never understood why Windows continue mixing everything together on ONE partition. It's a big mess if you ask me.)

    Best regards,

    Henrik
