Help me install a newer version of a program just to try it without uninstalling the original version?

I use an old version of JASC's Paint Shop Pro (v 6.0) that I had to use the Run compatibility troubleshooter & put it in Compatibility modein my latest Windows 10 computer. I got to love using this program after a decade of using it on Windows XP. I'm no artist by any stretch but I just use it to modify or combine photos taken on my smartphone or PrintScreens from the phone or my computer's browser to use on Facebook.

Anyway, since I went through all of that hassle setting it up to run, I'd like to keep it installed on my PC even though it has a few little shortfalls, the main one being that Windows 10 can't use it to open a JPG photo, or any for that matter, just by double-clicking on them in File Explorer and they can't be opened it I right click on a JPG that's an email attachment and choose OPEN with my Control Panel set to open most types of images using my old Paint Shop Pro.

Corel purchased Paint Shop Pro from JASC sometime in the past during the XP years so I wasn't ever able to just upgrade to a newer version that would work fully with Windows 10.

So, my Question is, can I just leave my old JASC Paint Shop Pro v 6.0 installed on my SSD where my Windows and all of my programs are and then download/install a newer version of either JASC or Corel Paint Shop Pro alongside it or maybe onto my HDD that sits next to my SSD, that has all of my data on it?

I'd be doing this just temporarily in order to let me try different versions of Paint Shop Pro that I found available at www.oldversion.com/windows/paint-shop-pro in order to see how they work doing the few things that I do all the time since I'm an admitted Facebookaholic.

Here's what is on that site to save you from going there:

We understand that the program has been sold to another company, Jeff. However, we have limited access with the program even if it is installed in a Windows operating system which is why we ask you to check your options with your program developer so they can assist you further in avoiding system file issues when installing different versions of the same program in your PC.

We appreciate your kind understanding on this matter. If there's anything else, we'll be glad to assist you further.

    Hi Jeff,

We understand that you want to install the program in different versions on your Windows 10 PC. However, installing multiple versions of the same programs can cause system file conflicts. To confirm and guide you on how to set this up, we would suggest that you refer to the program developer. They will be able to provide you appropriate assistance regarding this matter.

Should there be anything else, do not hesitate to let us know.

I'm sure you read in my clearly thought out & written Question that "the program developer" hasn't been in business since a long time ago or at least that they sold their rights to this product to another company long ago, maybe a decade ago. Therefore, they surely wouldn't be able to or anxious to provide support on an ancient software product.

That's why I came here to ask this, since it will need to reside & operate on Microsoft's operating system.

But whatever. Maybe I'll ask the same thing in the Tech Republic forum or find a forum of users of the old versions of JASC's Paint Shop Pro program.

You might consider installing a system backup program like AOMEI, Macrium, or EaseUs Todo & making a sysem image.

Then you can try all your experiments & reimage back to the original fairly simply.

In theory just doing fresh Restore Points should accomplish the same goal, but personally I dont trust Microsoft restore points, nor their system image in the current 1709 version of windows 10.

I understand enough to know that various processes that are written into the coding of a program will be handled differently based on how it was written. I guess my only hope, since the company either no longer exists or doesn't support that program since they sold it so long ago, would be to either find a user forum and hopefully get some good advice or to just try it myself. I could also go thru the whole ugly process of uninstalling my old version, try the new, and then decide where I want to go from there.
