I have an older Seagate External Hard Drive and am wondering if there are any tools in Windows 10 that I can use to try to repair the external hard drive?

    Hello Jeff,

You may try running Disk Error Checking and the CHKDISK tool to help you repair your external hard disk. Both tools are designed to fix errors on your disk. Make sure that you're signed in as administrator before performing these steps:

    Run Disk Error Checking

    1. Plug in your external hard disk.
    2. Open File Explorer by pressing the Windows keys button + E.
    3. Go to This PC.
    4. Right-click your external hard disk under Devices and drives.
    5. Select Properties
    6. Go to Tools tab.
    7. Under Error checking, click Check.
    8. If prompted, click Yes or enter the administrator password.
    9. Click Scan drive > Repair drive.
    10. Wait for the process to finish.
    11. The scanning process may take a while depending on the size of your external hard disk and the specifications of your PC.

    Run the CHKDSK tool

    1. Plug in your external hard disk.
    2. Click the Start button.
    3. Type Command Prompt.
    4. Right-click Command Prompt and then select Run as administrator.
    5. On the Command Prompt screen, type the command below:
      • chkdsk <drive letter>: /f
    6. ***<driver letter>***would be the letter assigned to your external hard disk.
      • For example: chkdsk E: /f
    7. Do take note of the spaces between the command.
    8. Again, the scanning process duration depends on the size of the external hard disk and your PC's specifications.

Repairing depends on what extent it is damaged.

Let us check what the damage is:

    Download and run HDTune .

    http://www.hdtune.com/

    Make screenshots of the following

    • the health
    • the error scan
    • the benchmark

    Post back the screenshots.
