How to install a HP LaserJet 1200 printer in Windows 10
I've had this printer for a vey long time and it continued to work fine after I upgraded from Windows 8 to Windows 10. It is USB connected to my computer. However, I recently did a fresh re-install of Windows 10 and now it does not recognize the device as a printer, rather it is just detected as a A USB device named HP LaserJet 1200. I've tried to install PL5 and 6 drivers in both Win8 and Win7 compatibility mode and system just won't see it as a printer.
Since I've used the printer under Windows 10 since it came out, clearly this can work. Can anyone provide insights on how to do the setup?

2017-10-21T15:11:38+00:00 Rather than spending too much more time fiddling I'd simply Clean Reinstall the printer which always works, lasts longer and actually saves time:
- Power up the printer, if wired unplug it's USB cable from PC.
- Right click Start button in Windows 8/10 to open Apps and Features (or in Windows 7 type it in Start Search) to Uninstall all the printer software. Restart.
- Next copy and paste in Start search box: printui /s /t2 (Note that there is one space before each forward slash).
- Right click result to Run as Administrator.
- Open the Print Server properties, Remove the printer’s drivers for this printer and for any other printers you don't use presently. If you get a message about access denied or the printer being in use and you cannot find the driver or any installed program that would account for this, you may restart the computer in a diagnostic startup and then use the printui command to remove the driver package(s): https://www.isunshare.com/windows-10/enable-dia...
You must restart back to normal mode before you will be able to install the printer again.
- Now type Control Panel in Start Search, open CP, choose Icon View. In Control Panel open Devices and Printers, right click the printer to delete the Printer and any scanner or fax of the same name. Restart PC.
- Go to the printer model’s Support Downloads webpage to download and install the basic driver. If a wireless printer you will need the full software package to get it set up fully. If you want to be able to scan from the printer top to the PC then you'll also need the full package.
- Extract Printer software, right click Setup file to Run as Administrator. Follow the setup screens closely as you install the software. For USB it should prompt when to plug in the printer.
If you have further problems reply back with results of each step.

2018-03-30T11:38:31+00:00 I have had the same problem. The printer was added as an USB-device, not as a printer.
In my case the problem was not the printer driver but the HP USB-driver (DOT4).
- Search on the internet on 'hp laserjet 1200 usb driver windows 10'
https://support.hp.com/nl-nl/drivers/selfservice/hp-laserjet-1200-printer-series/29789
- Download from the HP driver site the 'HP Laserjet USB (DOT4) communication driver for Windows 8 or higher'
and install it. A port DOT4 is added.
- Add the printer. I used the standard Windows-driver (HP Laserjet1200 PCL5).

2017-10-28T21:41:23+00:00 I did and not matter what it isn't detected ass a printer, so the installer won't see it. It is seen as an Unspecified Device in Devices and Printers
