Thanks for the reply, but I HAD tried all that you suggest above but four hours later the printer was still dead. I suppose its my fault really because people always say if the printer goes offline, you should 'remove device' then re install, or click on 'work offline'. That's all well and good but not here! Incidentally the manufacturers website only gave advice on the obvious things to check, you know 'is it switched on?' and 'use the dropdown box and select ''printer online'' as if these would not be the first things you would try ha ha !!
I ended up putting the xp225 disc in my laptop and letting it load as if it was a new computer. I had to do this twice. Not ideal when you only want to print something. The whole operation from start to finish was five hours. Its a pity this printer isn't a different shape, it would make an excellent plant pot. It is clearly no good at what it was bought for and will be in the bin should this happen again, as this is an all too often occurrence. It also goes through ink like a hot knife thru butter, but that's not the issue here...
