Hi All,

For a while, I would sometimes have sound on the laptop. Now, I can't hear anything even if I restart. The speakers are at 100%. Any suggestions?

Thank you :)

    Hey there, Photomom317

Welcome to the Microsoft Community forums.

The first thing I would check is make sure that your default speakers have been selected. Sometimes if you plug other devices into your computer such as headphones, it makes them default, or uses that driver instead.

Please can you right click onto the speaker/sound icon and select sounds.

This will open a pop up window where you are able to control the settings for your speakers. Please make sure you select the Playback tab along the top row. This will show you the playback devices your PC/Laptop uses.

Right click onto speakers and select set as default if it isn't set as default (Shown with a green tick).

If it is, right click and select test, does sound play?

Another method wool be to right click onto the speaker icon and select Troubleshoot and let Windows do the troubleshooting and see if that can fix the problem.

    op this this,

    Regards,

First, run the Playing audio troubleshoot - open Start > Settings > Update & security > Troubleshoot

    Scroll down, select Playing audio

    Click Run the troubleshooter

When complete, restart your computer then check if audio is working again.

    Press Windows key + X

    Click Device Manager

Expand Sound, video and game controllers

    Right click your audio adapter

    Click Properties

    Click the Driver tab

    Is there an option rollback?

    If so, click it.

Also, check to make sure the audio driver is fully updated. This is often the problem when you upgrade to a new version of Windows 10. Sometimes reinstalling the latest available driver from the manufacturers website helps.

Open Start, type: change sound card

    Select the Playback

    Right click your Speakers

Click Set as Default Device if it isn't already

    Select your speakers

    Click Properties

    Click the Levels tab

Use the slider to adjust level

Thank you Nathan. This was very helpful. Only thing...After the diagnostics, the window that popped up said:  Problems found - Generic Audio Driver    Detected.

I wish I was more PC literate...I have always been a Macintosh gal.

    Hey there, Photomom317

Please can you run a test using HPs built in hardware test here:

    https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c03467259

This should point out in more depth if there is an issue, and tell you how to fix it.

    Regards,
