Windows icons pinned to taskbar are invisible

Some of my windows icons - calculator, edge, and settings - are invisible when pinned to the task bar or when they are opened.  The space is there, the line under it shows, but not the icon.  The calculator icon shows in the start menu, the edge and setting icons seem gone altogether.  I have run system file checker.

    Apologies for the delay in getting back to you. Have you already resolved the issue on your end? If not, please try these methods to have your icons reappear.

    Method 1: Check if you're on tablet mode.

    Several users have reported that their devices were in tablet mode and have restored their icons back by turning it off. Select action centeron the taskbar (next to the date and time), and then select Tablet mode to turn it on or off.

    Method 2: Create another user profile.

    Sometimes, user profiles get corrupted and show these kinds of behavior. Let's make sure that yours is not. Follow these steps

    • Select the Start  button, then select Settings  >Accounts>Family & other people>Add someone else to this PC.
    • Enter a user name, password, password hint, and then select Next.

    Update me if there are improvements.

    Hi,

    Missing system icons or shortcut icons on the taskbar could be due to a recent update having missing components or system files that got corrupted. To resolve your concern, kindly answer the questions below:

    • Were there any recent changes made or updates installed prior to the issue occurring?
    • What were the results of the SFC scan that you performed?
    • What other troubleshooting steps have you attempted?
    • Which version and build of Windows 10 is installed on your device?

    We look forward to your response to our queries.

    I have run sfc multiple times, and the DISM command.  Also followed instructions for rebuilding the icon cache.  Still no icons for windows components, such as calculator, edge, settings.  Any other options for repair?

    Thanks for the update and sharing the troubleshooting that you've attempted. You can definitely attempt to rebuild the icon cache as that is also a step that we suggest depending on what we have already completed. For now, we recommend that you follow the steps post by ZigZag3143 (MS -MVP) on this link to run the DISM command which is the next command to be run after the SFC command. This will automatically detect and replace system files that may be corrupted and could be the cause of the issue.

    Regards.

    Yes, this was after an update.  I tried to uninstall the updates, but it did not fix the problem.

    SFC reported no errors.

    Version = 1709

    Build = 16299.248

    I tried going back to a restore point, and was not able to restore to an earlier point.  Would not boot at all, so I had to work my way back to the original point.

    I have tried checking for additional updates.

    I downloaded and ran AVG PCTuneup, and also ran their repair to restore icons.

    I followed several articles from the MS Support automatic chat, like deleting all icons from the task bar folder and recreating them.

    I found an article on using 3rd party software to rebuild the icon cache, but have not followed it, as I am a bit over my head with this, and reluctant to try things without some guidance.

    Thank you.
