Windows 10, clean install error 0xc000014c, bootable USB

Hello!

I have created multiple install medias (USB 2.0 and USB 3.0), via Media Creation Tool. I am creating the install media on my laptop and i am trying to perform a clean install to my desktop computer. My BIOS recognizes the flash drive, but wont start windows 10 installer.

Desktop computer specs, where i am trying to install the OS:

CPU: Intel i5-6500

MB: Asus H110M2 D3

Harddrive: SanDisk Ultra II SSD 240GB Sata III

Memory: 2x 4GB HyperX Fury (SATA III)

GPU: GeForce GTX 960 2GB

PSU: 520W

Optical Drive: Asus DRW24B1ST

Description of error:

Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. Fix the problem:

  1. Insert your Windows installation disc and restart your computer
  2. Choose your language
  3. Click "Repair your computer"

File: \EFI\Microsoft\Boot\BCD

Info: The Boot Configuration Data for your PC is missing or contains errors

Now the kicker: I dont have any windows 10 installed on that SSD-drive. I can take the same USB-flash drive and start up windows 10 installer on any other computer and it works fine. I've formatted the flash drive and made a new install media multiple times.

What i've tried so far, without results:

  • Make a new install media (Diffrent flash drive)
  • Unplug my SSD-hard drive completely, while trying to boot unto flash drive
  • Remove both of my RAM-sticks one by one
  • Remove my GPU completely
  • Removed the Motherboard CMOS-battery for 15 minutes and let it reset back to factory settings

I am really lost, i cant boot windows 10 installer from any of the flash drives. I need help.

    Hi,

If your laptop was running Legacy Bios and you did not specifically create media for a different machine, it may not work if your Desktop is running UEFI Bios...

    The error...

    File: \EFI\Microsoft\Boot\BCD

Info: The Boot Configuration Data for your PC is missing or contains errors

indicates that the media is attempting to boot into a UEFI machine and can't find the EFI boot partition..

You might go into the Boot Options at the POST screen and look for a "USB Flash" and\or a "UEFI USB Flash" and see if one will work...

Or you may need to create new media...

Thank you for your fast response.

I regret to inform you, that i cant acces command prompt, at all, because the original error keeps coming up before installation media starts up.

I cant access any of the options that come with the installation media, because i havent gotten to that part yet. Like i said on my original comment, i dont have a installation of any windows on the HDD/SSD and none of my installation medias work. Im trying to perform a clean install on a new hard drive.

I have tried to replace SSD with a formatted HDD but i run into same problem.

    Any other suggestions?

    Best regards.

We would suggest enabling Safe Mode Mode with Command Prompt to install Windows 10. Safe Mode with Command Prompt starts Windows in Safe Mode with a Command Prompt window instead of the Windows interface. This option is generally used only by IT professionals. You can also check out this link on how to reinstall Windows 10for more information.

    Hello Santtu,

We understand that you aren't able to boot to Windows due to the Boot Error, 0xc000014c. We would suggest trying out the troubleshooting steps listed below and then check if it will resolve the issue.

    1. Insert the installation media and then check if the following suggestion helps to find out if the boot manager is missing although chances are less for this kind of situation.
    2. Follow this path: Troubleshoot > Advanced Options >Command Prompt
    3. Please enter the following command line to check the disk partition for errors: chkdsk/f /r X:( drive letter)
    4. Then please try the following command lines to rebuild the BCD store:

    CMD> bootrec /scanos

    CMD> bootrec /rebuildbcd

    CMD> bootrec /fixmbr

    CMD> bootrec /fixboot

We definitely encourage you to check out the helpful article by Andre Da Costa onhow to download official Windows 10 ISO files using Media Creation Tooland another similar thread on how to prepare a Bootable Install Media for Windows 10 using DVD, USB and SD Card.

Hope this helps and let us know if it works.
