Windows 10: USB 3.0 port not reading USB 2.0 flash drive

Hello

I have a DELL laptop that just had a motherboard and hard drive replaced.  After re-installing and updating Windows 10 (7th March), I noticed that the USB3.0 port is no longer able to read USB 2.0 flash drives.  It still reads my USB3.0 portable hard drive.  The USB 2.0 port still works.  Is there a way to fix the USB3.0 port to make it compatible with USB2.0 flash drives again?

Many thanks in advance!

    Hi

I used my USB2.0 flash drive on my work PC and the USB3.0 port was able to read it.  So it is not a problem with my flash drive.  I do have a silly question.  When I looked at Universal Bus Controllers in device manager, I saw 3 options:

    Intel(R) USB3.0 Extensible host controller - 1.0 (Microsoft)

    USB Composite Device

    USB Root Hub (USB 3.0)

My question is, should my laptop also have a USB 2.0 driver?

Many thanks for your continued response to my problem!

    Hello Riley

Thank you for your reply.  I followed your instructions.  When I expanded Universal Service Bus Controllers, there were three options:

    Intel(R) USB3.0 extensible host controller - 1.0 (Microsoft)

    USB Composite Device

    USB Root Hub(USB3.0)

I right-clicked the first one and uninstalled.  I only had to do this once since when I uninstalled this, I could no longer see the "folder" Universal Service Bus Controllers.

Anyway, unfortunately, the USB3.0 port still does not read my USB2.0 flash drive (although it can read my USB3.0 portable hard drive.  The USB2.0 port is still working.

    Hi

Windows 10 was updated using Windows Update Assist after the new motherboard and hard drive were installed.  Nevertheless, I checked again today (using Windows Update Assist) and it confirmed I already have the latest.  After updating Windows10, I did update the BIOS and all the drivers marked urgent and recommended.  I have checked again via DELL Support Assist today and my laptop has the latest drivers.

According to DELL, and I quote, "there is a windows update that is causing the USB ports not to work".  I was advised to do a system restore?  I am confused since how can I do a system restore when it is essentially "new"?

In the meantime, I will try to get to another PC with a USB3.0 port and see if that can read my USB2.0.

    Many thanks again,

    Bimby18

Hi Bimby18, you can try uninstalling the drivers for your USB ports:

    1. Type the Windows Key + X, then click "Device Manager."
    2. Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.
    3. Right click the USB controller then click "Uninstall."
    4. If Device Manager asks, click the option to delete the driver.
    5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 for all of the USB controllers.
    6. Restart your PC.

After restarting, Windows 10 should automatically reinstall the device drivers for your USB ports. If that does not work, let me know; there are some more steps you can try.

    Hi

Thank you again for the quick reply.  I tried your suggestion.  I received a message that my laptop already has the latest drivers installed (same message for all 3 options).  But, the USB3.0 port still does not read my USB2.0 flash drive.

    Regards,

    Bimby18
