Unable to install printer drivers on Windows10 64bit Pro

I recently had to buy a new printer (a Canon ip7250) but cannot install it to my main computer.

It has installed perfectly OK on my other Win10PChome PC and my Win10Home laptop and also on my wife's Win7 PC.

Nothing will work on my Win10 Pro 64bit system. I am also trying to install anolder printer (Canon ip3600) also without any success.

With both printers, I have downloaded the lateset drivers from the Canon website, having shutdown my antivirus and firewall first.

I am the Administrator for my mainPC and regarding the ip3600, I have tried to use almost all of the compatability options.

The printer is recognised and appears in the Devices and Printers. If I right click and work through to update the driver, the process is always the same.

The final message (and this is true for both printers attempts) is:

"Windows encountered a problem installing the drivers for your device"

"Windows found drivers for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install them"

"Access is denied".

I have followed maybe a dozen web suggestions and have tried all of them without any success.

What do I need to do to get a printer working on this computer?

My previous printer that failed (Canon ip4600) was working perfectly OK.

. "my pc is running like clockwork"

    Really? That's nice.

When they run like that don't delay the upgrades too long.

    This problem is now RESOLVED!!!!

I finally managed to get a copy of Win10Pro 1703 and did a clean install.

    http://windowsiso.net/windows-10-iso/windows-10-creators-update-1703-download-build-15063/windows-10-creators-update-1703-iso-download-standard/

I was then immediately able to install the printer drivers for both my Canon ip7250 and ip6300.

Prior to this I saved a disc image (of the Win10 1709) using Macrium Reflect (an excellent program) and

as I had the time I restored this disc image and then found that once again I could not install any of the printer drivers.

This surely proves beyond reasonable doubt that the problem lies with Microsoft and  Win10 1709?

I have now once again  clean installed 1703, the printers installed immediately and I now have the job

of reinstalling my programs and saved files.

Once complete, I will use Macrium again to make a 1703 disc image so that if this happens again II can easily

get back to a working pc.

Thanks Microsoft for nothing, and wasting several days of my life.

Hi Andre, thanks for your reply.

When I bought the PC I also purchased and installed Win 7 Professional SP1 and then upgraded freely to Windows 10. Since then everything has run without a hitch and the Windows "upgrades" (?) have installed automatically.

My current operating system is Windows10 Version 1709 (OS Build 16299.248).

I am quite capable of re-installing the Windows system, but from experience it is very time-consuming and needs good planning to back-up files etc before starting.

If as you say the current windows 10 version "is flawed" then SURELY it is Microsoft's responsibility to issue a fix?

Mine is not an isolated case.

Which version of Windows 10 is currently installed? See how to verify:

    https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki/windows_10-windows_install/how-to-verify-if-you-downloaded-or-installed-the/06f98274-741a-45df-9e0d-6cc48816824b

Which version and edition Windows did you originally upgrade from or was installed prior to your current version:

    Windows 10 - 1703, 1607, 1511, 1507 (build 10240)

Windows 7 Starter, Home Basic, Home Premium, Windows 8.0 Core, Windows 8.1 Windows 7 Professional, Windows 7 Ultimate, Windows 8.0 Pro, Windows 8.1 Pro

    If its Windows 10 1709...

I am going to recommend you downgrade to Windows 10 1703.

Step 1: download Windows 10 1703 from the following link:

    https://tb.rg-adguard.net/index.php?sid=74a7cf51-12ed-19f5-2885-3b48ad9ee67b

    Choose the following:

    • Windows Final
    • Windows 10, version 1703
    • Windows 10 Pro + Home
    • English
    • x64 (64 bit) x32 (32 bit)

Step 2: create a bootable copy

    https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wiki/windows_10-windows_install/how-to-prepare-bootable-install-media-for-windows/442447c3-0826-4473-a5b7-36568d20ef9d

Step 3: perform a custom install

    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/insider/wiki/insider_wintp-insider_install/how-to-do-a-custom-installation-of-windows/38adfa8c-32f8-4354-8c53-13b5f2cf7e44

You should backup your files before downgrading.

Applications will need to be reinstalled.

The custom install will archive your files, so you can recover them from the Windows.old folder - make sure you follow the instructions to the letter.

There are some compatibility issues with Windows 10 version 1709 and certain hardware or software. There is no explanation why a lot of these problems are happening in Windows 10 1709, but the release is significantly flawed. Software and Hardware that once worked in previous versions, just suddenly stops working in Windows 10 1709 after an upgrade and sometimes loses functionality or stability.

    Hi Grey,

It is possible that you're unable to install printer drivers due to compatibility issue or corrupted drivers. To provide you the accurate resolution, we'd like to gather more information:

    • What is the make and model of your computer?
    • Since you've mentioned that you've followed a dozen suggestions, what are those troubleshooting steps you've done so far?

In the meantime, we suggest that you follow the steps in this article on how to troubleshoot printer problems in Windows 10. You can expand each section and perform the instructions which you're not yet done.

Additionally, you may also check the information shared by Andre Da Costa on this thread about how to determine if you're computer is compatible with Windows 10.

Keep us posted if you need additional help.
