This computer is not running genuine Windows. To use Windows without interruption, this computer needs to be running genuine Windows

I just started getting this pop-up yesterday and I have no idea why. I have a valid copy of Windows 7 installed, and it has been running happily for about 8 years, until yesterday.

I've searched for a solution to this issue and have tried a few things to no avail. I saw a thread similar to my issue but could not determine what actually resolved it. (https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/this-computer-is-not-running-genuine-windows/9d6dcb9c-b4b7-4569-ab88-d8d7d12b4150). I tried the 'NET STOP CRYPTSVC' etc, renamed the CATROOT2 folder, let the machine sit for over an hour, but I still have the same issue.

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated!

BTW, after completing the above instructions and reactivating Windows, I still get the pop-up that says "This computer is not running genuine Windows".  Evidently the reactivation process didn't work. Any suggestions?

Thank you. I have followed the instructions above and from what I could tell my Windows 7 was reactivated successfully. Time will tell if I get that pop-up again. One of the things that was a result of my Windows not being genuine is the fact that I cannot get any Windows updates. From what I read, if Windows is not activated, updates are not available.

I just tried to check for updates, and I get an error message, stating that "Windows Update cannot Currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer". The Windows Update service is indeed started, and so are the Cryptographic and Background Intelligent Transfer services. Please see the screenshot below:

When I check the error logs, I find an event error, stating that 'The Cryptographic Services service failed to initialize the Catalog Database. The ESENT error was: -538". Please see screenshot below:

I figured if I got the genuine Windows problem fixed, I would get the ability to get updates back, but not so. I still can't get updates even though the service is started. Any ideas on how I can get updates back?

Microsoft has activation specialists that know how to deal with these things - actual human beings.

Click the Start button/orb and in the box enter:

    slui  4

Choose your nearest country (United States in the example), call the toll-free number to speak to a human being:

Don't press any keys on your phone, don't respond to any voice prompts, just wait, wait, wait and you will be connected to a human being.

Explain your situation and they should help you.

If they don't help or can't help just hang up and call back again and the chances are good that you will talk to a different person and eventually you should find some nice person that will help you.

Thank you for the reply. I have not purposely installed any language packs unless automatic updated did so. My machine automatically installs updates. I did not install any updates personally, but that's not to say a bad one didn't get installed automatically.

I did replace one of my mirrored drives about three weeks ago. Could that be the problem?

I've thought about this, but I'm hesitant to reactivate Windows. I do have a valid license key but I'm afraid if it fails for some reason, my computer will become unusable. I thought it would be best to reactivate with the phone option, so that if something does go wrong, I may get someone on the line that could help. If you can assure me that reactivating will will not make the computer unusable, I will do so. Also, would a reactivation by phone be best? Please advise.

    Hello,

This issue may occur for several reasons. The most likely reason is that language packs (MUI) have been installed on computers that are running Windows editions that are not licensed for additional language packs. This issue may also occur if certain system files are corrupted. We'd like to get some details about the issue you're experiencing in order to assist you effectively. Have you made any recent changes to your computer like installing updates?

To get the most out of Windows, it's important that you activate it on your PC. Here's how. If that did not work, we suggest you perform a system restore on this link.

Let us know how that turned out for you.
