Unable to join a Minecraft realm on childs account

Hi there,

I have an adult Microsoft account for Win10 and I have created child accounts for my daughters, also on Win 10. One daughter can accept my Minecraft realm invite and join the game fine but my other child cannot on their account. I first made sure both child accounts had the same permission but it didn't help. Then I set the child account to full permissions but still cannot accept invite nor join the realm. I amended permissions on the general privacy tab in "family" for my daughters account and also the Xbox 360 and Xbox One tabs, though I understand it works on the Xbox One account primarily for Win 10 Minecraft. To be clear, this is on the https://account.xbox.com/en-GB/Settings page.

We can see the invite, but when clicking on it, it says:

error: You cannot play online multiplayer through Xbox Live because of how your account is set up. This can be changed in your privacy & online safety settings on Xbox.com.

If I launch the realm on my computer, my daughter can see it in the Minecraft Friend's tab under Joinable Friends. When she joins, she gets an error message saying:

Failed attempting to join realm. Please try again later. Unable to connect to realm.

Again, my other daughter can access this fine and I've tried amending every setting in both the Microsoft Family and the Xbox website setting, but no joy.

We are all on the same version of Windows 10 Minecraft and also Windows 10 plus latest updates.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as we're entirely out of ideas and things to try now.

    Hi,

There is another way of changing the restriction settings for the child account. To allow a child account to access apps and games online, you may check the restriction settings for Windows 10 and Xbox One on this link.

If the issue persists, we suggest that you contact Xbox Chat Support on this linkto validate if the settings for the child account reflected on the profile.

If you need further assistance, don't hesitate to reply to this post anytime.

I had this issue but for me here is what I had to do to get  my sons able to play on my realm.

    1.  Go to: https://account.xbox.com/en-US/Settings

    2.  Sign in

    3.  Click on your childs picture/name.

    4.  Click on 'xbox one/Windows 10' box.  its the box between privacy and xbox 360 under the  names in your family.

    5.  Make sure to 'allow multiplayer' AND 'You can create and join clubs.'

    6.  Click save.  Give it a few min to catch all your setting up. I waited 10 min just to be safe.

My sons have had no issues with joining my realm  since i changed these 2 setting under family and there profile.

    ANTOREL-

Thank you so much for making this post.  This is the "Golden Ticket" answer that everyone is looking for.  Why MS & Mojang can not give a more direct answer to this solution is beyond me.  Maybe they are not even aware of it.  The key to this is the "Allow Create & Join Clubs".  It seems that Microsoft decided to use the club feature to handle realms and that is why this access is required on a child account.  Yes you also need the "Allow Multiplayer" but in my case I already had that enable but was blocking the "Club" feature on my child's account and that is why it did not work.  Allowing "Clubs" allowed my child to join my friend's realm.

My friend & I are notifying both MS & Mojang and asking them to please make a clear posting of this so other people with kids can get back to enjoying quality family time.

    Regards,

    Chops2u

Many thanks Chops2u and Antorel for your informative posts. This didn't solve my issue but I am quite sure it will have been very useful to others. I long ago allowed everything on my child's account (specifically including allow multiplayer and allow clubs) as I'd given up thinking logically about the problem, but she was still unable to join a realm, despite the other family members and external friends able to join without issue.

The family's realm expired and I will not renew it as I'm not going to waste any more money or effort in attempting to resolve this issue if Microsoft and Mojang don't take the issue seriously. Naturally, I'm not going to leave my 8 year old out of the game when my other daughters and everyone else can join - so no-one will have it. That's as simple as it gets.

I'll be honest, I expected better of Microsoft when it came to buying Minecraft and honouring the commitment to the legions of young fans that it had.

    Scott

    Hello there,

I am getting the same problem however my account is no longer a "child account" and I have updated all restrictions to allow rather than block and I still get the same error.
