"We can't set up mobile hotspot" - can't set up hostednetwork either

It seems i have quite a common issue after looking at different forum posts, but none of the solutions seems to work for me.

I have an ethernet connection that i wish to share using my Asus PCE-AC88 wifi network. I tried enabling sharing in adapter settings on firstly the ethernet connection, then the wifi connection (seems that it's limited to one adapter at a time), neither fixed my problem. By standard it's of course enabled on my ethernet connection, since it's the one i'm trying to share.

I've also tried updating my driver (was already the latest driver, and i can't seem to find a windows 8.1 driver version which was a suggested fix), troubleshooting tool, i tried creating a hosted network in CMD ('Hosted network supported: No'), i tried running the powershell script to fix the ICS service and sfc /scannow didn't fix it either.

I also couldn't find the Microsoft Hosted Network Virtual Adapter, even after showing hidden devices, all i found was a "Microsoft Kernel Debug Network Adapter".

Excuse me, but I did not remember having already had this test done. Let's try one last attempt:

1- Go to the Asus website, download the latest driver and put it in a folder.

2-Go to the control panel> Programs and Features, select your wi-fi adapter, right click and choose uninstall. Verify in device management that the wi-fi adapter has been removed.

3-Install the driver previously downloaded in Compatibility Mode:

right click on the executable file and run as administrator. Click on properties> compatibility tab. Select the checkbox: Compatibility mode.

Scroll down the pull-down menu and select Windows 7 or Windows 8, then press Apply> OK.

Restart if you are asked to.

    Please let me know.

This problem has been bothering me for months and I tried almost every solution I could find. Mysteriously what worked for me was creating another admin account???

Today I created a new user account for a friend and having remembered reading somewhere that this problem is linked to your microsoft user account (I don't remember where sorry) I decided to try turning on mobile hotspot form the notification window and it worked.

I deleted the user account and it still works on my own user account. Another weird thing is that it still shows 'Hosted network supported: No' when I ran the command 'netsh wlan show drivers' on cmd... I'm not sure what's going on here, but I can finally use my laptop as a hotspot, so yay.

Will update here if mobile hotspot stops working :)

No. If you have not found that parameter, it means that it is not listed on your adapter. The parameters may differ depending on the brand of the network adapter. Try to roll back the drivers:

Device management> network adapters, select your adapter> driver> update driver.

Select "Search for driver software on your computer"

Select "Choose from a list of available drivers on your computer".

You will be offered 2 or more drivers, choose and install a driver different from the one currently in use.

This is a screenshot of the advanced settings of a wi-fi adapter that shows the wireless mode parameter.

    Hi JDuusT,

your problem is pretty common. If CMD reports that the hosted network is not supported, it's a driver problem with your Wi-Fi adapter. It is for this reason that the virtual hosted network adapter is missing in Device Manager. And your adapter does not even have the appropriate driver to use the mobile hotspot function if the virtual wi-fi direct adapter is also missing in the device manager. So I suggest you contact the Asus technical support, or change the type of Wi-Fi adapter of different brands.

Open Command Prompt and type netsh wlan show wirelesscapabilities and then press enter.

    Post the result.
