Expand Human and Interface Devices
Right click HID-compliant touch pad
Click Disable

I've gone to settings and it will only allow me to control sensitivity from most to low, not off. Please help.

Most laptops have a function key to turn off/on the touch pad
on the Lenovo ideapad Z400 it is Fn+F8 (hold the Fn key and press F8).

Yes - I found the toggle button (F6) and an image glowed on screen letting me know the touch screen was now off. Now I can type and not worry about accidentally swiping and erasing or re-positioning the flashing line in the middle of a paragraph unknowingly. Thanks E for Excel and everyone else for such quick replies!!
Windows Key+I > Devices > Touchpad > At the top, there will be toggle key for Touchpad which you set to OFF.
