I am assuming you still have the hard drive in your system that came with it, and have not previously re-installed Windows recently.

Good  Windows techies know that when a system is installed that long, you can achieve a huge performance improvement by doing a complete re-install of the system.  So, if you were my client that's what I would do.

    But first,

If yours is a laptop, I would replace the hard drive regardless of whether it shows any problem, because I do not expect laptop hard drives to last much longer than 5 years.

If yours is desktop configuration, I would run hard drive manufacturer's tests on the drive to ensure it is not in the process of failing.

If you wish to follow this advice, just respond and I will give you much more detailed how to advice.

Seeing as how you have brought up Good  Windows techies which infers that we aren't.

I have been involved in computing since before Microsoft came into existence.

And if a client has problems with 1 or 1000 computers I don't just advise them off-hand to reinstall the operating system/s.

IMO that is the lazy way out. I look for the cause of their problem first.

Unless you wish to install more RAM, which may or may not be possible:

Download the Crucial Scanner which will tell you what is the matching RAM for your Motherboard and the max. amount of RAM your Motherboard can accommodate.

    Crucial System Scanner

    http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/systemscanner

    @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

See if this assists you to improve software performance.

Scan for Malware with the FREE version of this Program.

Included is the correct link to download it from.

And do not accept the "Pay for version" Trial option during installation

Download, install, update and scan your System with the free version of Malwarebytes AntiMalware::

    http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes\_free

    @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

You can clean up your Hard Drive using these two methods.

    "Delete files using Disk Cleanup"

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/delete-files-using-disk-cleanup#delete-files-using-disk-cleanup=windows-7

    Using the Free CCleaner Program:

    http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner

Under NO condition use the Registry cleaning Option in CCleaner

    @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

And it is not recommended that you use ANY Registry or Cleanup/TuneUP/Utilities Program as they may do more harm to your Operating System than any good that they claIm to be able to do.

    @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

Make sure that you have the latest updated Drivers:

Go to your Computer or Hardware Manufacture's website > Driver and Software Support Section > look up your Computer or Hardware Model number > then your Operating System > locate the correct Drivers > download and install them.

    @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

These are other steps to follow, which does include some of the above:

    "Optimize Windows for better performance"

It would be a good idea to also run the System File Checker Tool just to make sure everything is correct in the System Files.

"How to use the System File Checker tool to troubleshoot missing or corrupted system files on Windows Vista or on Windows 7"

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833

Use the System File Checker tool (SFC.exe) to determine which file is causing the issue, and then replace the file. To do this, follow these steps:

    1. Open an elevated command prompt. To do this, click Start, click

All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click

Allow. 2. Type the following command, and then press ENTER:

    sfc /scannow

The sfc /scannow command scans all protected system files and replaces incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions.

    Cheers.
