Guys

Need some help. My laptop is currently acting weird. It's battery indicator is showing it's in charging status even when it is NOT plugged in to a power adapter. The battery itself seems to be ok as it is draining normally during usage and gets charged up when I plugged it in for charging. But when I unplugged the laptop from the power adapter, it continues to says it's "plugged in, charging". This started to happen after install a windows update.

I had tried all the following actions below but it does not fix anything. I will appreciate any suggestion to fix this.

  • Shut Down and Reboot
  • Uninstall all previous windows update.
  • Reformat the laptop to fresh install windows
  • Uninstalling Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery and reboot it to allow it to auto re-install
  • Triple check there is no short / dirt in the charging port that could cause any short.

    Hello E for Excel

Thank you for the suggestions. I tried option 1 - 3 but it didn't helped with the situation. As for option 4, my laptop is actually one of those 2 in 1 laptop/tablet with detachable keyboard and a sealed battery. Anyway, I pried it open and tried to follow the steps in Option 4 as closely as I could but the moment I detached the battery from the main board (while still having the power chord plugged in with power), it will shut down. Hence I wasn't able to fully execute your recommendations in Option 4. I did however tried to uninstall the Microsoft ACPI-Compliant System and let it auto re-install during restart but the problem still persist.

Anyway, I would like to thank you for being a great contributor and for the wonderful suggestion. I appreciate you taking time to help out a total stranger like me.  Any other suggestion will be appreciated. At this point, I am 90% convinced this is a software related issue rather than hardware (battery is charging/discharging normally, no sign of bloated physical battery, charging current is quite stable at 1.2amp - 1.5amp.

There can be several causes but to startwith, you can try following. Please try these options one by one and check after each option.

    1. Troubleshoot Power

Type troubleshoot in Windows Start Search box > Click Troubleshoot > Scroll down > Click Power > Run the troubleshooter > Follow on-screen direction.

    1. Restore Default for Power Settings

Right click on battery icon in system tray > Power options > Click Change Plan Settings > Click Restore default settings for this plan

    1. Disable Fast Startup

Right click on battery icon in system tray > Power options > Click Choose what the power buttons do > Click Change settings that are currently unavailable > Scroll down to Shutdown settings and uncheck Turn on fast startup > Click Save changes

    1. Uninstall / Install Battery Driver

Shut down your computer > Detach power chord > Remove battery > Attach power chord > Reboot your computer

Windows Key+X > Device Manager > Expand Batteries > Right-click Microsoft ACPI-Compliant System > Uninstall > Shutdown the computer > Remove the power chord > Attach your battery > Attach your power chord > Reboot the computer to automatically install the driver
