Windows 10 black screen with cursor after login

Hi, I have been trying to login to my computer for two days but every time I enter my password a black screen with only a cursor appears. I am unable to access anything on my computer besides task manager. I tried to run explorer.exe which did not do anything, I also tried many different fixes which all did not work. Hope you can help.

    I hope, you might have resolved the issue.

    In case, if anyone out there has the same issue, you can try the following option to resolve the issue.

    Whenever you end up with 'Windows 10 blank screen with cursor after login' follow below solution.

    Step 1: on the blank screen with cursor, Click 'Ctrl+Alt+Del' it will bring you the option for "Task Manager" along with other options

    (You can also use the key combination CTRL+SHIFT+ESC to open the Task Manager directly.)

    Step 2: Click on Task manager 'File '-->New Task (run)

    Step 3: Type at Run 'services.msc' (without quotes), it will open windows services.

    Step 4: Under the services, look for the service name 'AppReadiness' and double click on the 'AppReadiness" service.

    Step 5: It will open 'AppReadiness' properties. Click on startup type and select 'Disabled", Click Apply and click ok.

    Restart the PC:

    Step 6: Click on Task Manager 'File' --> New Task (run)

    Step 7: type at Run 'CMD' (without quotes) -->It will open command prompt

    Step 8: At the command prompt type 'shutdown /s /f', this will shutdown the system.

    Restart the system and you should be able to login without any issues. 

    The above fix resolves what it says in the subject and could be a workaround solution only.

    Hi Sean,

    Start your PC, just as Windows attempts to load (spinning dots), press and hold Power Button for 5 - 10 seconds to perform a Hard Shut Down

    Do this twice

    On the third start Windows will boot into the Recovery Environment and from there you can access System Repair, Safe Mode, Command Prompt . . . etc.

    Please try each option one at a time, then see of Windows will boot . . .

    Go to Troubleshoot - Advanced Option - Startup Repair

    See if Windows startup can repair itself

    Go to Troubleshoot - Advanced Option - System Restore

    Check to see if you have a restore point you can go back to

    If you do not have a Restore Point, go to Troubleshoot - Advanced Option - Startup Settings and click Restart

    Upon restart, press 4 to enter Safe Mode

    Once in Safe Mode, backup your data if you do not already have a backup

    Open Device Manager and check to make sure all your Drivers are up to date

    Reboot to see if Windows will start Normally

    If the above fails, go to Troubleshoot - Advanced Options - Reset this PC

    Choose to keep your files and apps, just your files or to keep nothing

    Then start the Reset

    Sean and others,

    I have come across this problem in two different formats and it always occurs after Windows Updates have been applied.

    If you get the black screen with the cursor BEFORE the login screen , then you should be seeing a blue screen with spinning dots, as the PC finishes applying an update. Do NOT turn off your PC in this state, as it will just have to start again!! Leave it to finish applying the update changes.

    The longest I have known this to last was 2 hours, but it does depend on the updates being applied.

    If you get this AFTER the login screen, then this is an update that effects the users profile directly. Again, Do NOT restart as you will only start the process again. Leave the PC to finish applying the changes. The longest I have known this to take, has been about 35 minutes, but again, depends on the updates being applied. This will probably effect every user that has an account on this PC.

    There will be a temptation to CTRL+ALT+DEL and Sign Out. I have noticed that this does seem to improve the speed of the next login, but I cannot guarantee it to be a solution and I don't know if it leaves any long term damage to the users profile.

    IMPORTANT NOTICE: If the hard disk light, on your PC, is flashing, it indicates that your hard disk is busy. Restarting your PC while it is trying to apply updates can cause long term damage to your system and may force you to do a Recovery or a Re-Install. If you do either of these options, then you will still have to apply the update at some point and are likely to come across the problem again.

    Hope this information is helpful. I have learnt to be patient with my PC on startup, in these cases, otherwise I just end up facing bigger problems.

    Hopefully Microsoft will fix this bug so that we get some form of information when our PCs are applying updates, rather than looking like they have crashed.

    This worked for me:

    Log in using a different user account:

    The black screen problem can also be caused by corrupted Windows user profile. If you can log in to Windows with a different user account, and use it without any problems, a corrupted user profile may be the cause. You can then replace the folder of the corrupted user profile with the folder of the working user profile. Here’s how:

    1) Restart your computer in Safe Mode. (That was not even necessary  for me)

    1. Login with the working user account.
    2. Navigate to C:\Users{working-user-profile-name}\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Caches.
    3. Copy the folder “Caches”.
    4. Navigate to C:\Users{broken-user-profile-name}\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Caches.
    5. Replace the folder with the folder from the working user file.
    6. Restart your PC and you should be able to log in again with the ‘corrupted’ user-profile. Good luck!

    If you don’t have an existing working user account, you can create a new account. Ensure your Windows user account is an administrator. (If it’s not, you can activate the built-in administrator account in Windows and use it to login to Windows.
