Updating Windows 10 USB Drive

Hi! sorry if this is a duplicate question of some sort.

Anyway, When I bought Windows 10 it came in a box with a Windows 10 USB drive. I use the USB drive often for fixing various Windows 10 issues. only problem is, it has a 2015 version of windows 10 which is really old. Any way I could possibly update the USB drive? It's kind of annoying to install the fall creators update and other updates whenever I use it.

Thanks!

Hi Aiden, the official Windows USB flash drives are heavily protected, you will not ba able to write to that drive . . .

Your only option is to purchase an 8GB flash drive and create up-to-date bootable Windows 10 Installation media on that

    Click this link:

    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-downlo...

to download the Media Creation Tool (Click on Download Tool Now), with that you can download the latest Windows 10 ISO (Select Create Installation Media for Another PC), you can create a bootable USB flash drive (min 8GB) using that tool

The simple answer to this is no, the retail USB Windows 10 media is specially write protected, in fact, it has some type of encryption, which makes it impossible to modify.

So, you can't update the install files on it and its forever stuck with build 10240. Your best course of action is to get a new 8 or 16 GB USB empty USB thumb drive and make a new copy with it as new versions of Windows 10 are released.

Hi Aiden. I'm Greg, an installation specialist and 8 year Windows MVP, here to help you.

The latest versions - including the Spring Creators Update released any day now - require an 8gb flash stick, or DVD.

To create Windows 10 Installation Media install Media Creation Tool and follow the directions here: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/m....

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and let us know how it goes. I will keep working with you until it's resolved.

Thanks again, but still got the error from before. (on a different PC as my laptop does not have mouse and keyboard when booting off the USB)
