AsRock N68-VS3 UCC and Windows 10 64 bit

I clean-installed Windows 10 Pro 64 bit. I've got AsRock N68-VS3 UCC mainboard with Via audio and an external GeForce 6600 video card. I first noticed that my display drivers didn't install automatically, I then had to download the latest Nvidia Geforce 6600 driver from the manufacturer which was for Windows 8 actually. Luckily it turned out to work just fine with Windows 10. I didn't solve the problem with my audio device, however. I've got a red cross near the sound icon at the tray and when I hover over it - a message "no audio output device is installed". Also, in the Device Manager under the section Sound, Video and Game Controllers there is only the generic High Definition Audio Device. I've already tried to install a couple of Via drivers which even say that they have a Windows 10 support, but that doesn't seem to work. I know that the hardware is a bit old, but unfortunately it's my office PC, so I'd really be glad if any software solution existed.

    Hi Maria,

It happens that there's a corrupted file inside one of your system folders that makes the sound output inconsistent or not working at all. When a component of an operating system that involve audio devices has been missing or corrupted, your audio output will function in an unusual behavior.

    Here's what you can do:

Important: The first thing to do is to install your device manually, you need to visit the website of the device manufacturer to download the latest drivers and install it. If the latest drivers are not available, you can also contact them directly through their support hotline.

    • There’s a built-in utility called System File Checker tool that helps users to perform scanning, repairing, and restoring of missing or corrupted files of a computer. You can visit this link: Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files to know how to run this tool.
    • Perform a full system scan by using Windows Defender.
    • Update your operating system to the latest version including the cumulative updates.
    • Test your speaker or any sound output by replacing them. Try the other device if it does the same.
    • There’s a tool that helps troubleshoot sound issues in Windows. You can visit this link: Fix sound problems and follow the steps provided. Once there, click the drop-down menu and select a situation that applies to you.
    • Visit our Tech Blog: Windows 10 – Audio Troubleshooting Tips.
    • You can also download and run our easy fix solutions from this link: How to use Microsoft easy fix solutions. Once there, click the Find and fix problems playing sounds hyperlink. Download and run it to start the troubleshooting.
