Installing Windows 10 Version 1709

Anonymous
2017-12-03T14:44:27+00:00

My installed Windows 10 is version 1703.

Now trying to install version 1709. The installation process, after preparing and downloading and preparing, is asking me to remove following Apps because they aren't compatible with the upgrade:

     Avira Antivir

     Avira Antivir

     Avira Antivir

     DVD-RAM Driver Software/BD Driver Software

     Avira Antivir

     DVD-RAM Driver Software/BD Driver Software

My question, first of all is, why more than once same software listed.

I have removed the antivirus software from the Settings and from the registry with the help of Revo Uninstaller. And again tried to continue with the update, but installation still brings up the same removal list.

I have uninstalled my two DVD writers SATA slave devices from Device Manager and later, after shutting down PC, even disconnected the hardware DVDs. Else, I do not know how to remove Driver Software from Windows. They are two, cdrom.sys and PxHlpa64.sys, in the directory C:/Windows/System32/Drivers and I can not delete them just like that.

And again I tried to continue with the update, but installation still brings up the same removal list.

Summing up, I have following questions:

  • Why same software more than once listed?
  • Why same list coming up after deleting the antivirus software?
  • Why DVD-Ram Driver Software removal list comes up when they are uninstalled/disconnected?
  • How to remove in Windows 10, Driver Software (They are not listed in the installed software list)?
  • Where does the installation process look for the incompatible softwares and find them even after they are removed from the system?

Would appreciate very much for the answers. I am locked up at current situation, but would like to continue installing version 1709.

Interestingly enough, been fighting this for months.  Turns out I had a backup of my laptop on one of the user profiles, that is where the Avira Antivir and DVD-RAM Drivers Software/BD Driver Software was located.  Deleted that backup and bam the update took.

Truly the feedback here is that a file or folder that is being held outside of a known installation location should not hold up an installation.  At least provide an alternate option, so I would not have had to delete that backup.

    Thoughts?

Oh and those files seemed to be referring to a Windows Vista system, so it wasn't even viable.

Hope this helps someone else out there, too.

Today, December 19, 2017 at 15:30, I received an automatic Fall Creator's Update and it took more an hour to install and several restarts and at the time when previously and several times, the update listed more than once the uninstalled anti virus program and DVD device driver and didn't continue updating, now it just gave a warning that it is trying to finally work out to install the update.

The finally, at 17:45, the automatic updated installed system is Windows 10 Home, Fall Creator's Update, version 1709, Build 16299.125.

And everything is working just fine so far.

Thank you a lot Microsoft. You made my Day.

    Hi,

Windows will require to remove programs that may not be compatible and that may interfere with its update process. Now, if the same notification appears, then it's because the automatic Windows Update attempted to update the PC several times, but it detected that the antivirus programs is still installed. In addition to that, if the system still notifies you that a certain driver still needs to be uninstalled even if you already did uninstall it, then that means that it has not been successfully removed. So, for you to completely install the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update, we suggest that you run the Windows Update Troubleshooter first. To download and run the tool, you can refer to this article: Fix Windows Update issues.

If the troubleshooter tool didn't help in resolving the issue with the update, then you can proceed and perform the next solution from the same article.

    Let us know the outcome.

    Hi,

I guess you have wait patiently until they have analyzed your problem and have a solution for automatically updating your system

In my case, the automatic update NEVER by-passed Avira AntiVir and DVD-RAM block. I hope some of you might benefit here from my rocky road to success (but there are always potholes):

First I tried the free Registry Cleaner from GlarySoft Utilities w/o any luck.

    Then,

    1. Error 0cx1900208 led to https://www.reddit.com/r/Windows10/comments/6ai2ti/windows\_10\_upgrade\_error\_0xc1900208\_how\_can\_i/

2a.  When an update fails, the link above directed me to the latest ‘Panther’ (sic) folder on my machine

2b.  Select the latest timestamp for a compat*.xml.

2c.  Open the .xml in an XML reader or text editor or, in my case, Wordpad

In part, the contents read as follows:

    </DriverPackages><Programs><Program Name="Avira AntiVir" Id="" IconId="avgntflt.sys|9c2573fe34cbde31">

3a. Ah hah, I searched for ‘avgntflt.sys’ and found that 3b. The file location was under a folder ‘../UBCD/Programs/Avira Antivir’ and guess what other program I found there — DVD-RAM.

The suspect folders Avira AntiVir and DVD-RAM were part of UBCD disk originally given out on a flash drive by a fellow computer club member back in 2012. They were just sitting in an obscure folder; they were NOT in the registry! Searching and finding ASCII characters in the Registry would have been too simple. Why they were not found as part of my ‘avira’ Windows Search shall remain a mystery.

    1. Deleted UBCD and DVD-RAM and rebooted
    2. After some 20 hrs, Windows 1709 was purring — well almost, as has happened many times before in Windows 10, 1709 finally killed my WinMail; I told you there was a pothole. Well, time to move on.

Three things I have learned from this experience:

    1. MS Troubleshooting and Virtual Chat NEVER mentioned Compatibility XML files.
    2. I need to get rid of utility files that I try out and seldom use afterwards on a regular basis. Who would have thunk that MS would scour my entire hard drive file by file and flag non-compliant 3^rd^ party non-system files, although I guess an antivirus program IS a de facto system file of sorts. I’d like to see their black listed files.
    3. Why should Microsoft care if I did copy it, but not have it installed? Class action, anyone?

    My main question would be

    • Why is it not compatible with the Antivirus and DVD anymore?

So the update isn't an update but a removable of software and hardware driver that you can't use anymore.

    Smooth, Windows.

Windows has made it where Windows 10 works fine as is. But when Windows updates comes around, the software or hardware we can't use anymore. Is there any logic in that Microsoft?

Plus, Avira Antivir is compatible with Windows 10 so why is the update asking for a removable of the program?
