Windows 10 features on or off?

Anonymous

what is the purpose of selecting any "WINDOWS FEATURES" to turn on or off?

Would having any of them off benefit us?

Why would Window have these features for us and then ask which ones we want to have on or off?

Which ones should I turn on?

Is it ok to have them all on?

Thanks so much Greg Carmack - Windows MVP!!

Your reply has given me more to go off of.

I'm confused with some of the options that I would think would automatically be checked or completely colored in and they aren't  -

    For example;

(BOX IS BLANK) Internet Information Services:

    FTP Server

    Web Management Tools

    World Wide Web Service

I would think these would be checked off... ?

I really am sorry if my questions are "too easy" and I should know the answers, is what MANY say. However, I work for a company that has taken care of ALL my computer "INSIDES" and I never had to know... well here I am not working right now and trying to get my laptop up an running properly so I am able to "WORK"  Yes I know I can hire someone to do all this but I WANT TO LEARN along with it not taking to much of my time.  I think I will probably have to go to each one and look up its purpose and yah-de-ya... just to determine my outcome... LOL WHY SO MANY OPTIONS LOL....

Hi Tammy. I'm Greg, an installation specialist and 8 year Windows MVP, here to help you.

I'd leave those Features in the Turn Features On and Off panel on in case you need one of them, and because other features may rely on one of them. Those are there mostly to have a way to troubleshoot problems with one of them, including reinstalling it.

If you don't want any of the Windows 10 apps then those that can be uninstalled will have an Uninstall button in Settings > Apps & Features when you click on it. The ones which don't are relied upon by other apps so that system instability might occur if one is removed.

I hope this helps. Feel free to ask back any questions and let us know how it goes. I will keep working with you until it's resolved.

    Hi Tammy,

That is there to give you the opportunity to add or remove components like Windows Media Player, earlier versions of .Net Framework, Internet Explorer . . . etc. if you don;t need or use them . . .

Those specific features that you're referring to are mainly needed for servers and are included for IT admins to enable them if being used in a server configuration.

Occasionally they're also needed for troubleshooting or another program and will be enabled in the background or you might be prompted to do so, but this is very rare.

    Hope this helps more.
