This site can’t be reached. The connection was reset.

Hi all,

Something has happened this year because there are a couple of US sites I hardly can open or not at all from Portugal. I contacted one site owner (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed) with the same problem, but they cannot reproduce it, and they don't understand why this happens. I can open a wide variety of worldwide sites from this Windows 10 laptop, but there are some notorious sites such as www.cnn.com which absolutely do not load either with Firefox or with Google Chrome. For instance, in a new empty tab, cnn.com does not do anything, remains white, does not even do a loading. Just flashes and remains as if I did not even hit the enter.

When using Google Chrome, it is different because an error message pops up. It displays: This site can’t be reached

The connection was reset.

Try:

Checking the connection

Checking the proxy and the firewall

Running Windows Network Diagnostics

ERR_CONNECTION_RESET

I run the tests but they return always: Troubleshooting could not identify the problem (e.g. I am trying to reach a specific site: cnn.com).

Sometimes I get this:

The connection has timed out

The server at www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov is taking too long to respond.

The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few moments.

If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer’s network connection.

If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

This is again untrue, because the site is up and running. But I can easily open other sites. Why I cannot open now these sites like cnn.com?

Cheers and thanx in advance

    Hi Jack,

Antivirus software and network issues are just a few of the possible reasons why this issue is happening. To help resolve the issue, we suggest following the possible solutions below:

Solution 1: netsh Winsock reset Method

    1. Open Command Prompt(Admin).
    2. Type netsh Winsock reset, then press Enter.
    3. Restart your computer.

    Solution 2: Disable your Antivirus

If you have any enabled antivirus program, we recommend disabling them temporarily to check if the issue will be resolved by disabling them.

Solution 3: Check the Internet Proxy Settings

    1. Type Internet Options in the search bar, then press Enter.
    2. Go to the Connections tab.
    3. Deselect the Use a proxy server for your LAN option there if it is ticked.
    4. Click OK.

If the issue still persists even after performing the steps we provided, we recommend connecting to other network provider to further isolate the issue.

Keep us in the loop with the result.

I keep on trying, but from this particular laptop, I cannot open sites like cnn.com. Not even from incognito mode. I tried already Opera, Firefox, Chrome. But I can open them from another laptop connected to the same home network. How is this possible???

Opera says in this laptop that: The webpage at **https://www.cnn.com/** might be temporarily down or it may have moved permanently to a new web address.

    Hi there!

I use wireless, thus the 3rd option does not apply. The first two I tried already. I use Avast and had no problem before. However, I cannot open p.e. cnn.com. It just does not open.
