The HDMI port on a laptop is for video output only on 99.9% of laptops, very few laptops have HDMI input, that is why it would not work on your laptop

No, plugging an Amazon Fire TV Stick into your PC's HDMI port should not have damaged the Fire TV Stick or the PC. However, you cannot use it as expected that way. You would need to connect the Fire TV Stick to a standalone monitor, or a TV, with at least one HDMI port.
